3% Cash Back Card

3% Cashback Card From Alliant Bank

Alliant Credit Union has a Visa Signature credit card that will earn 3% cash back everywhere for the first year. Annual fee is also waived.

Alliant Cashback Visa Signature Credit Card Details

  • Earn 2.5% cash back on all purchases after the first year
  • No limit to the cash back awards you can earn
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Works with Android Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay
  • Minimum credit limit of $10,000
  • $59 annual fee, waived the first year
  • See all details here

How Cashback Works

This card earns cash, not points. If you have more than one card per account, cash back will be pooled together. Cash back maybe redeemed as statement credit or transferred to an Alliant account, starting at $25. It can’t be used to pay minimum monthly payment on your credit card.

Cashback expires in 5 years, in first in first out basis.

Applying

Update: This card will be available to all members beginning in April. More info here.

This is the catch. You can’t apply for the card. It is only available through upgrades. If you already have a Alliant credit card, you can call 800-328-1935 to upgrade to the Alliant Cashback Visa Signature Credit Card.

Alliant usually has a signup bonus for the Platinum card, with targeted offers as high as $500. These offers are sent out to their current members. If you have a checking or savings account with them, you can also try calling to see if you can get approved directly for the Cashback Visa Signature card, instead of an upgrade.

Conclusion

It’s great to see another cashback card offering a tremendous earning rate on all purchases. 3% cashback for the first year is the best cash rate out there. The second year will probably be comparable to other 2% cards since the rate drops to 2.5% and you’re hit with a $59 annual fee.

There’s no application link online and the offer page states that it is available through upgrades only. But you could still try applying by phone, if you are an existing Alliant customer.

  1. I think you are using the term “great to see another cashback card offering a tremendous earning rate” incorrectly. 5x is tremendous, 3x is a shade above sucky.

      • Agreed. Your only other options are JCB (if you live in one of the few states they serve, and good luck getting any reasonable credit line), or Discover. With Discover, you don’t get that match until the year is up. After that, back to 1.5%.

With the Alliant card you only drop to 2.5%; albeit with a small annual fee. Though most will make up that difference over a straight 2% no AF card provided your annual spend is $12K or more.

        • Even if your annual spend is $20K you would make a whole whopping $40 more than a 2% cash back card once you factor in the annual fee. And that assumes you are not spending in any categories like office supplies or groceries where you would use the chase ink card or the Amex Blue for those. I think this card might be useful for year 1 only, but after that, I think very few people would keep it.

          • Of course there are 5% cards. Yes, you can factor in category bonuses on other cards but that’s not the idea here. The point is if you can put $12k/year on this card it beats the 2% cards. And I’m not going to get into specifics on an open forum on why that’s valuable to a seasoned MSer.

  2. No mention of USAA. They have a 2.5% Cash back card with no annual fee. Just have to have a $1,000/month direct deposit.

  3. Great post. I called Alliant to apply for the card today. Talked to the loan officer John at ext 2310 or direct at 773.462.2310. You CAN apply over the phone. You do not need to be an existing member to apply. A free membership is set up if the card is approved. Their membership pays 1% APY on the their savings if you decide to bank with them. Their checking is also free, with tons of surcharge ATM’s and $20 ATM reimbursements per month. The loan officer did say you need good credit to qualify and they need to see your last 2 paystubs if you are not a member/new member. It’s a great card and I’m happy to be a new Alliant member!
