Big Changes for Chase Hyatt! 40K Points Bonus Will Replace 2 Free Nights

The Chase Hyatt credit card is one of the few cards that gives you free nights as a sign-up bonus and it’s a great way to enjoy some of the best Hyatt properties.

Here’s the standard sign-up bonus on this card:

  • 2 free nights at any Hyatt hotel or resort worldwide after you make $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening.
  • Get 5,000 Bonus Points after you add an authorized user to your account and make a purchase with your card during the first 3 months as a cardmember.
  • 1 free night every year after your cardmember anniversary at any Category 1-4 hotel or resort.
  • Maintain Discoverist status for as long as your Hyatt Credit Card account is open.

The card has a $75 annual fee, but that 1 free night every year, more than makes up for it.

Current Highest Bonus

Right now, there’s a best ever bonus available, if you have nights over points. It’s similar to the standard bonus, but you also get a $50 credit. Here’s what you get:

  • 2 free nights at any Hyatt hotel or resort worldwide after you make $2,000 on purchases in the first 3 months after account opening.
  • 5,000 Bonus Points after you add an authorized user to your account and make a purchase with your card during the first 3 months as a cardmember.

Plus

  • $50 Statement Credit after your first purchase

New Signup Bonus Coming June 29th

We have seen different bonuses on this card. The best one has probably been this one for 2 Free Nights, $50 & 5,000 Points. We have also seen a points bonus in the past, either for 40K or even a targeted offer for 50K points.

The points bonus will now become the standard bonus on the card.

Effective June 29, all new Hyatt Credit Cardmembers will now earn 40,000 Bonus Points after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. This offer will replace the current new cardmember bonus of 2 free nights.

Analysis

This could be seen as good or bad news, depending on your travel habits. To better understand the value of each bonus and how they compare to each other, we first need to look at the award chart for World of Hyatt.

The current bonus of 2 nights has the potential to be worth as much as 60,000 points if used at a Category 7 hotel. That’s the reason that many travelers who prefer luxury stays favor the 2 night bonus.

On the other hand, a 40,000 points bonus, can only get you one night at a Category 7 hotel. But, it can get you way more than 2 nights if you’re looking for quantity instead of luxury. Points also give you the possibility to book Points + Cash stays that give even more value to your points during Hyatt promotions.

Here’s the Points + Cash chart:

Conclusion

The card doesn’t fall under the Chase 5/24 rule, so one good thing about this news is that you have time to apply for the card now, till the 29th, or wait for the new bonus. Whether you apply now or wait, will strictly depend on what you value most.

  1. In my particular case, travelling with a family, the 40k points is better. In many luxury hotels the “standard room” that comes with the free nights is for two persons max. With points I can upgrade to the Suite or be able to maximize using hotels with a lower category

  2. Is the current 2 free nights only for standard room redemptions? (So only category 6-7 will outdo the 40k) or can it be redeemed against suite and grand club as well?

    • Correct, only category 6-7 will outdo the 40k. “Each Hyatt Credit Card Free Night Award is valid for use within one (1) year from issuance for one (1) night in any available standard room at any Hyatt hotel or resort worldwide or participating M life resorts.”

  3. I currently have a Hyatt card opened for more than 3 years. I am thinking of closing so I can reapply to get the bonus of 2 night certificate. Would I be OK if I close now, then in about 3-4 days, apply …before June 29? My credit is 830, currently have 5 Chase credit cards opened, and at 2/24 for Chase rule. I am concern the timing of closing and applying for the same card in just few days. Anybody has experience doing same or similar situation with other Chase card? Thanks.

  4. Does anyone know if Hyatt allows a husband and wife to combine accounts before booking a room ? I am wondering if I should open the credit card in my wife’s name and then roll the 40k points into my account. Thanks folks
