Chase Ink Plus 40k Reduced Bonus

Yesterday I wrote about the new Chase Ink Plus 60K offer as a Frequent Miler Quick Deal. While the increased bonus officially isn’t supposed to start until Monday, there is already a live link. (It is not on their public page.) You can find out more in my post.

While doing research for that post, I headed over to the normal Chase Ink website to grab some screenshots. When I reached the page, I noticed something very disturbing. The offer for the Ink Plus was only 40,000 points instead of the normal 50,000 points.

Don’t believe me? You can actually see this reduced offer yourself. Simply head to this page and click refresh. You may see the 50,000 point offer initially, but the 40,000 point offer will eventually show up. What does this mean?

I think it could mean one of two things:

  • Chase is planning on reducing the bonus on the Chase Ink Plus (this has long been rumored)
  • Chase is going to present different bonuses to different visitors similar to what American Express has been doing lately.

My Thoughts

I wouldn’t be surprised if either of the scenarios I mentioned above plays out. We have also heard rumors of a possible annual fee increase on this card for awhile. All of these factors combined with the loss of Lounge Club tells me that perhaps Chase is tweaking the card and offers to make the Ink Plus work better for them financially.

While I don’t know if this is the case, perhaps a reduced bonus and less features will make the card work for Chase. In my opinion as long as they don’t get rid of the 5x bonus categories then I am fine. If the card loses those (which I don’t think will happen) it is a whole different story.

Conclusion

Perhaps this is nothing, but the fact remains that Chase is A/B testing a 40,000 point bonus offer for the Chase Ink Plus. While the bonus is going to be 60,000 for the next couple of weeks, I wonder what it will be when that promotion is over.

What do you think?

  1. […] I can’t tell you whether or not you should apply for the Chase Ink Plus or Cash, however the bonus is not going away. Currently the Plus has an increased bonus of 60k and the Cash has an increased bonus of 30k through 5/25/15. After that the bonus should return to the normal levels of 50k and 20k respectively, although I wrote that there is some evidence that the Ink Plus bonus may get reduced further. […]
