Citi Sears Mastercard Spending Offer

Citi Sears Mastercard Spending Offer

My wife opened her Sears credit card and added me as an authorized user back in 2001. The card used to have a generous limit, but some time around the crisis of 2008 Citi (who issues the card) lowered the limit to just $500 which is where it remains today.

Over the years the card went from a simple store card to one that earned proprietary points that were pretty much useless. Eventually Citi converted the card to a ThankYou earning product which means it can be valuable. I don’t normally use it for everyday spend, but from time to time I get great offers to pull it out of the card organizer. I just received such an offer.

The Offer

Activate this offer now to earn 5X Bonus ThankYou points when you spend $200 or more on eligible purchases and use your Sears Mastercard from 9/1/17-9/30/17 (up to a total of 2,000 points).

Key Terms

  • This promotion is not transferable; is only for use with the Sears Mastercard listed in this email; is subject to credit approval and the Citi ThankYou Rewards Terms and Conditions for Sears Card Accounts located at thankyou.com.
  • The following types of transactions don’t qualify as purchases that earn ThankYou Points or Bonus ThankYou Points: use of checks that access your Sears Card Account; balance transfers; cash advances; travelers checks, foreign currency purchases, money orders, wire transfers and similar cash-like transactions; lottery tickets, gaming chips and similar betting transactions; interest and account fees; unauthorized charges; and items returned for credit.

Check If Targeted

The only way I receive these targeted offers is via email. I almost missed this offer, but I was able to find it in my email after someone told me to look. The subject of the email I received is, “Activate now to get 5x Bonus ThankYou® Points” and the email comes from “Sears Card Issued by Citibank”.

How to Maximize

This promotion basically gives 5X on up to $400 in spend. I could see some people simply purchasing a gift card to hit the spend, although using the card for normal spend is a great solution as well. Considering this card earns ThankYou points, there are definitely plenty of options for redemption.

Conclusion

One of the best ways to rack up miles/points over time is to take advantage of spending offers. I have written before about my Banana Republic Visa’s generous offers and now it is nice to see the Sears card stepping things up a bit.

  1. This is the oldest card in my stable (1984), issued as a store card that anybody could get. Citi took over management after Sears got out of the financial services business (post Discover). I get regular offers and always have a recurring charge (keep it open for the credit history).
I used to trade in the points for 20% off Sears cards, but that died. As did the trading up you could do with Sears G/C!
Don’t have much use for the TY points, but the offers are nice. Got the 10% one right now.

    • I’m curious about this as well: The Sears MasterCard that gets targeted 5% and 10% offers seems to return this in ThankYou points. Is this the same version as the ShopYourWar Sears MasterCard that I see on the main app page when I google the card? If not, is it possible to still get the version that offers ThankYou points? Does the ShopYourWay version get lucrative targeted offers as well?

  2. I got it but, with 5% back in statement credits. I also have a 10% back in statement credits for grocery stores, gas, and restaurants which seems to be overlapping. With all the targeted offers I seem to be using this card all the time. I also at one time had my credit limit decreased because, I had stopped using it.
