Ninja Tricks to the Rescue
As the holidays approach and the sales get fiercer, it can be important to look at opportunities to stack deals and discounts to get some amazing deals. Last year I wrote about how I scored a best ever price on a television by stacking deals at Dell and this year similar opportunities are available, but even better.
The Dell Deal
Currently Dell has a great deal on a 65″ Vizio 4K television. They are offering it for $899, but are throwing in a $300 ePromo gift card for future use.
Now in my math I am going to assume you will be able to use this gift card (and rewards earned) later at full value. The gift card will have an expiration date and thus most likely can’t be re-sold or that will affect its resale value. Feel free to adjust the math to get a valuation you are comfortable with.
To start, the math looks like this:
- Cost: $899.99
- Promo Card: – $300
- New Cost: $599.99
Add In Rewards & Portal
Dell also has a program called Advantage Awards which gives 5% of the purchase back in credit to be used later. Additionally you can earn 6% back from a shopping portal. So now the math looks like:
- Cost: $599.99
- Rewards (5% of $899.99): -$44
- Portal (6% of $899.99): -$54
- New Cost: $501.99
Amex Offers & Split Payments
Ok, we are still doing pretty good, but let’s supercharge it. Remember last week when I told you to get your Amex Offers in order for automation? Well, if you did then you no doubt have the Dell Amex Offer on more than one account. In case you don’t know, that offer gives a $100 statement credit when spending $300 or more with Dell.
The kicker is that Dell allows you to split payment across three credit cards on their site. So if you don’t have tax you can add a very cheap filler item to get over $900 or with tax you’ll already be there. Then you can split the payment between 3 Amex cards with the offer and take off another $300!
- Cost: $500.99
- Amex Offers: $-300
- Final Cost: $201.99
Looking at it with Tax
Of course all of those calculations are without tax. As an alternative here is a final calculation for me, with 8.1% sales tax in Nevada.
- Cost: $899.99
- Tax: $73.35
- Promo Card: -$300
- Rewards: – $44
- Portal -$54
- Amex Offers – $300
- Final Cost: $275.34
Things to Consider
- If this isn’t the tv (or other item Dell sells) for you, Dell normally runs similar promos throughout the holiday season. Keep an eye out for the right size/quality of television and then stack deals in a similar way to how I am doing it here.
- Instead of 6% cashback you can also earn up to 3 miles per dollar through some of the mileage portals and also take advantage of the holiday bonus promotions for the Alaska, American, United & Southwest portals.
There are a ton of opportunities like this around the holidays. Between gift card promos, portals and even just plain sales you can do really really well. Stack a great deal with an Amex Offer or three and then it might just turn into one good enough for the ninjas.
