Posts That Caught My Eye

Delta Eliminates Instant Upgrade for Expensive Fares

This basically means that people flying on a Y fare won’t be able to upgrade at the time of booking. It will force them into either playing the normal upgrade waiting game or outright buying a first class ticket. We do know that Delta’s big push is to sell more paid first class, so this seems to be in line with that.

Rite Aid Goes Cash-Only for Loading Prepaid Cards (Serve, etc.)

We no longer have Rite Aid stores where I live, but I know that this will be a blow for some of you. Unfortunately the cash-only policy is also hard-coded into the system so you won’t be able to sweet talk cashiers into doing it.

Hyatt Hotels (H) Reports In-Line Q1 EPS

Hyatt announced their first quarter earnings. Pretty much everything is in line with analyst’s estimates. The company continued to increase its RevPAR (revenue per available room) and stated they believe they will be able to show a 3-5% growth in this area by the end of the year. They also added 21 hotels YTD with most of those being Hyatt House and Hyatt Place properties, although they did open the Grand Hyatt Rio and also debuted the Unbound Collection. You can also find their full press release here.

ANA Further Reduces Fuel Surcharges on Award Tickets

It is good to see ANA following through on their promise to lower fuel surcharges now that fuel prices have dropped. This program is interesting and definitely one that deserves a closer look given that surcharges are either minimial or completely gone. How about Japan to North America for for 75K-90K roundtrip in business with only $85 in taxes/fees!

Great Deals

  • Marriott Rewards is giving away 1,000 free nights to their members. Entering is as simple as filling out a form. The contest is sponsored by their co-branded credit card, but you don’t need one to enter. You can find the entry form and full details here.
  • Speaking of Marriott, today’s Daily Getaways deal is 20% off Marriott gift cards. There are quite a few packages available, but my guess is they won’t last long. The sale starts at 10AM Pacific/1PM Eastern. Full details here.
  • Samsung is offering 20% off gift cards from Overstock, Southwest, Whole Foods and more through the Samsung Pay app. You can find the full details and terms here.
  • eBay still has a number of gift cards on sale and has added a few new ones. If you have an accelerated eBay Bucks promotion they may be worth a look.

Have a great day!
