Popular 5X Earning Method DIES

United Mileage Plus X (MPX) shopping app is a good way to earn extra miles on gift cards purchases. Until recently it was also possible to earn 5X through the American Express Platinum credit card. MPX codes as “Travel – Airline”, which is a category that earns 5X Membership Rewards after recent upgrades on the card. The Premier Rewards Gold card was also earning 3X.

Now American Express has closed this loophole. MPX purchases are still coding as “Travel – Airline”, but are only earning 1 Membership Rewards points. The changes seems to have happened on February 11th as reported by Frequent Miler and also at this FlyerTalk thread.

Conclusion

A sad say for those who were taking advantage of this. I expected it to come to an end  sooner than later, but at the same time was hoping it would go on forever.

Do you have any purchases in the last few days? Let us know if they coded as 5X or 1X.

  1. Nooooo that sucks. I was earning tons of miles with the chase united 25% bonus and amex plat 5x bonus plus the actual merchant bonus. Certain times of the year I was earning 20 miles a dollar.
