Free Points & Profit at Officemax & Office Depot

For awhile the Office Depot/Officemax Visa/MC gift card deal spigot had been shut off, but following their recent Visa gift card promo, the company is now running a very similar Mastercard gift card instant rebate deal. Let’s take a look!

The Offer

  • Save $15 instantly when you buy $300 or more in Mastercard gift cards.

Key Terms

  • In-store only.
  • Limit two offers per household/business.
  • Discount is taken at the register.
  • Valid 9/04/16-9/10/16

The Math

Unlike with Visa cards where there are different types, I believe Office Depot/Officemax only carry one type of Mastercard gift card. The max denomination you can purchase is $200 for a fee of $6.95.

With a limit of 2, the best option is to purchase 3 of the $200 Mastercard gift cards. The math works out like this:

  • Cost of cards: $620.85
  • Minus instant rebate: -$30
  • Final cost: $590.85
  • Profit: $9.15

It is best to pay with a card that earns 5X at office supply stores such as a Chase Ink. For example, a Chase Ink card would also earn 2,954 Ultimate Rewards points. Alternatively, an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores would put an additional $29.54 in your pocket.

Amex Offer

If you were targeted for the recent Amex Offer, this deal should stack with that as well. Try splitting your payment among several Amex cards with the offer to save even more!

The Limit

There is a limit of 2 discounts per transaction and this is generally enforced. In the past sometimes the register has taken off more than two discounts if you purchase more cards, however those glitches are fixed quickly. It may also be possible to ask the cashier to ring you up in multiple transactions. Some stores are stricter than others. In other words, there is a limit, but it isn’t always enforced, but sometimes it is.

Liquidating

Mastercard gift cards sold by Officemax/Office Depot are issued by US Bank and are pin-enabled. These cards should work fine to load Bluebird/Serve at Walmart, but require you to quickly hit cancel and change the tender type. They also generally work for money orders if that is your thing. For more detailed information on liquidating these cards, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

Conclusion

This is yet another very good deal and considering the limited types of Mastercards (1 $200 SKU), I would expect the stock of cards to go quicker at some stores. Since this deal has already started, it is probably best to get to your local store sooner rather than later and don’t forget to stop at Staples for their Visa gift card deal. Happy 5Xing.

  1. Will MGGC’s work for unloading at grocery stores for MO’s? I’ve never done MasterCard GC’s before, only have done every kind of Visa pretty much. Thanks

  2. If you buy the Gift Cards, you will have to use them and lose out on at least 600 points with CC purchases. If the MCs are used at a multiple points vendor/type of sale, you would lose even more. Is it really worth it?

    • to some people. yes. and you dont lose out on 600 pts. mater of fact, if you dont do this, you lose out on thousands of pts… see what Amy says.

    • Paul, technically, say you buy $1,000 in gift cards. For a vendor purchase that you would get 1% cashback on your actual credit card, it would actually be wiser to spend $1.40 to liquidate your gift cards into $1,000 in money orders at walmart. You would save at least $8.60 (more if you do max 4 swipes up to $800 in each money order) this way, since if you spend $1,000 on a credit card even with just 1% you would get $10 back. Liquidating the debit cards into money orders right away and depositing them into your bank is for sure the best way to go. Never use debit cards for regular spend 🙂

  3. Paul, I look at it this way: Using the gift cards at a 1 point vendor will turn my transaction into a 5 point vendor, since I received 5 points for buying them. You are not losing out on 600 points, you are gaining 1800 or 2400 points, depending on how you want to do the math.

  4. With the newer swipe machines at walmart CSR desks, it is becoming harder and harder to hit ‘cancel’ and select ‘debit’ for these cards. I trier 3 walmarts yesterday and all of them quickly spit out receipt saying debit needed. anyways to work around it?

  5. Shawn, some of the gift cards on the rack at my Office Max have the activation tab completely removed already. Does that mean they have been compromised, even though it’s quite obvious that the actual card hasn’t been removed (to view the cc number)?

Also for those wondering, I did the math on the $100 gift cards (in case the $200’s are out of stock) and it comes at a cost of $5.70 after the $30 rebate. $605.70. $5.70 for 3028 points with 5x. Still pretty good… will take double the swipes though so a bit more tedious to liquidate…
