Office Depot Rewards Gift Card Cap
A couple of weeks ago Office Depot announced the rollout of their new “improved” 2% on everything Rewards program. This program had been tested in a few markets and indeed did payout 2% on all purchases including gift cards.
When the nationwide rollout of the program was announced many predicted that the gift card payouts wouldn’t last long. Indeed that appears to be the case. While rewards are still technically earned on gift cards, there is now a cap and it isn’t good.
The terms and conditions of the new program contain the following language:
Members earn 2% back in rewards on everything. The following limits will apply: Members will receive 2% back in rewards on up to $200 dollars spent per quarter on 3rd party gift cards, on up to $50 spent per quarter on Office Depot® OfficeMax® gift cards and up to $75 dollars spent on U.S. postage stamps per quarter.
Yes, you read that right. You can earn 2% on up to $200 in purchases of third party gift cards. That amounts to a whole $4 in rewards per quarter. I guess it should be noted that gift cards didn’t earn any rewards under their old shuttered program. Half full I guess? 🙂
When it seems too good to be true then it is. I know many people who had been enjoying the 2% unlimited charter program. For those people this definitely is a blow, but not a surprising one. What are your thoughts?
