Office Depot Visa Gift Card Deal Cancelled

A couple of weeks ago Office Depot and Officemax ran a pretty amazing instant rebate promotion on Mastercard gift cards. That deal proved to be too popular and they ended it after just a couple of days when it was supposed to run for two weeks.

Then, this week the stores began running a negative cost Visa gift card deal. While not as lucrative or popular as the Mastercard promotion, it was still a nice way to generate 5X points and a small profit if you have a Chase Ink Plus/Cash/Bold card.

The key word is “was”. The deal was supposed to run through the end of business today, but I am hearing from multiple readers that it was pulled as of yesterday. If you try to buy Visa gift cards today, no discount is given.

Takeaways

Based on these last two promotions, here are a couple of takeaways:

  • These negative cost deals are more popular than ever.
  • Office Depot is willing to pull the deals without any notice.
  • It is definitely best to maximize these deals as early on as possible and not wait until the published end dates since it is likely that they will be pulled.

It stinks to see yet another deal pulled early, although at least this one lasted 6 days. Were you able to do well with this deal? Did you get denied a discount today? Share your experiences in the comments.

  1. Fortunately for us we got a one-time exception at a store as a manager manually processed a $15 rebate since it was advertised to last through today.

We had the photo and had already begun the transaction.

  2. This morning they gave me a discount by manually entering it and I saw the manager pulling the sign. Looks like they forgot to pull the sign off the gift card rack earlier.

  3. My last purchase was at 7:30 pm last evening in Metro ATL. Thanks for saving me another trip for nothing (I had it with MC offer).

  4. I was buying VGC today and the cashier couldn’t understand why the $15 was not coming off when I asked about it. The manager then tried to help and could not figure it out either. So the manager said he would have to charge me full price and then refund me $15 cash. I agreed and was on my way.

  5. The manager at the OM I frequent said Corporate killed the deal yesterday evening and instructed stores to pull the signs before opening today. I hit both the MasterCard and Visa deals pretty hard the past two weeks but am concerned about the “randomness” of when future deals may be pulled.

  6. I was in Florida all last week and hit a lot of OM OD stores. All good there. When I got home today (Saturday) I tried in my hometown area, three stores. The deal was indeed pulled. No explanation.
I hope it come around again.
I did spend $ on other items while in the stores.

  7. I bought $1600 in VGC at ODepot earlier in the week and then found I can no longer buy MO’s with them. Oh well, I guess it’s groceries and everyday spend for me.

  8. I shied away from the MasterCard deal because i wasnt’ aware of any easy ways to liquidate them. Any of you guys have problems liquidating? Any easy ways to do so?

  9. Meh – looked at the deal when returning a printer cartridge for recycling and without an Ink there just was no interest. The Visas were toxic Metas with only $200 max cards so the total fees made it break even at best. This was OM’s version of a Daily Getaways snoozer.

  10. Talked to a Manager and he said they set aside certain dollar amount of rebate they’re willing to accept and then close it when passed their threshold. Said they had passed the threshold on Wed or Thurs but kept it going until Friday. Was also told there was some sort of glitch, in that you were supposedly able to use a debit card, buy $800 and you’d get $15 rebate for each card (so 4x $15). Not sure the manager had his story straight, but two separate managers said there was some sort of glitch using certain payment types.
