Review Tropicana Atlantic City

I recently attended ZorkFest in Atlantic City and had the opportunity to stay at the newly renovated Tropicana Atlantic City Casino and Resort. I was thrilled to stay there because the Trop was the first casino I ever visited. It was really exciting to see how much things have changed and developed since my last visit there about 10 years ago. My experience was very positive and I think this Atlantic City institution has something to offer for all visitors.

Atlantic City’s Boardwalk has an obvious draw in the summer with it’s prime beach location but I wasn’t sure the winter would be quite as interesting. I was wrong, even though it’s not as crowded, there’s a definite East Coast holiday vibe that you would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. I think Michael Trager sums it up beautifully in this article for TravelZork.

Overview

The Tropicana has over 2,700 guest rooms, situated in four separate towers. The towers vary in degree of luxury and price. The casino and property recently underwent a $90 million dollar renovation and it shows, the casino is fresh and expansive. Other attractions include IMAX and Indoor/Outdoor pools.

Rates: Because the Tropicana is a casino, there is no standard room rate and if you are a player, your room rate would vary. However, on a Friday night prices for suites range from $140- $400. I stayed in the Premium Suite North Tower Bi-Level.

Location

Review Tropicana Atlantic City

Tropicana AC is located on the Atlantic City Beach Boardwalk. It is a short ride from the AC Bus Terminal as well as the Rail Terminal. The Tropicana is within walking distance of several other Atlantic City Casinos. Ceasar’s Casino is closest to the Tropicana and is about a 10 minute walk along the boardwalk. There are many places to catch cabs and shuttles to the other casinos if walking is not an option.

Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

One area where I think the Tropicana really shines is in their food and beverage selection. Most of Tropicana’s restaurants are located within a beautiful streetscape, 3 story corridor dubbed “The Quarter.” The Quarter is wonderfully decorated to resemble the old school Havana, Cuba casino scene and houses a wide dining selection, retail shops, a spa and several night-life venues.

There are more than 20 dining options ranging from fast casual to fine dining including Jose Garces’ Okatshe, The Palm, Olon and P.F. Changs. TravelZork has a really nice in-depth review of Okatshe.

The great thing about being on the boardwalk is that hotels guests have access to the entertainment provided by all of the boardwalk casinos. Throughout the year there are countless activities to enjoy ranging from concerts to art exhibits. Visit TravelZork for more Atlantic City resources, including a monthly overview of events.

Check-In

Review Tropicana Atlantic City

I arrived around 9pm on a Friday night and there was a pretty long line that seemed not to be moving much. Luckily, there is a separate check-in for people with elite player’s club status as well as a separate one for VIP guests. Something you may want to consider if you have a lot of bags to carry would be valet parking for $15 (self-park costs $10), we found the walk from the garage to hotel check-in was very long and I was not thrilled to be lugging multiple bags through the casino.

The Room

On my way to the room, I noticed that the hotel’s hallways looked a bit worn. However, my first impression of the room was great. Immediately, I noticed the incredible floor to ceiling windows spanning two floors. Also the view of the ocean is something I could never get sick of, it was absolutely stunning. The room felt very spacious and grand because of the large space and the ridiculously high ceilings. The spiral staircase contributed to the feeling of luxury. I also thought the furniture and decor were modern and attractive and went really nicely with the overall ambiance.

I thought the seating placement and set-up of the living/room and dining room was well thought out and welcoming. Also downstairs was a bar and Keurig coffee maker. This would be a great place to host a gathering.

There are 2 bathrooms and I found the one on the first level to be underwhelming. However, the in-suite bathroom was beautiful, spacious and incredibly clean. Look at how big that shower is! The lofted bedroom was also spacious and had everything you would need. For anyone too lazy to walk down the stairs to leave the room, there is another exit off the bathroom which leads to the hallway.

Conclusion

I enjoyed the Tropicana and thought my room was very nice by any standards. This is a pretty solid place to stay if you’re considering a trip to Atlantic City. Let me know in the comments about your experiences or tweet me @bethanyatMtM

  1. honestly very very disappointed this time I went as it is not my first time as I do not recommend it more as I have done previously with many friends of mine, firstly they did not give me the room that I reserved, second the room was a mess the dirty pillows , the sheet rotates in a corner and worst of all was the humidity so great that there was inside the room I am asthmatic and on the other all the tables inside the room were completely wet and even the clothes are wet inside the closet, I did I checked out 1 hour before and as there was still time I decided to go with my son to the pool that hour and upon entering they told me roundly that no because I was no longer paying the hotel and to top it off from the first day that a security arrives I was persecuted every You see, I saw the theme of the mask on the first occasion, I told him that he was not going to remove it but that he had it at the level of the nose because he could not breathe, the next day in the morning having breakfast apart from Everyone in a corner of the lobby immediately saw me eating wine and told me that the mask had to be put up and I even said with my mouth full that please I was eating and that there was no one around me and the day before He had spoken to me in a bad way about the mask and I let it pass, because it was not enough that that same day entering the casino he was taking a sip of juice and when he swallowed to put on the mask he returned again with the same thing to the point that I had to alter and left the hotel very upset and displeased that even the pressure went up and I am a hypertensive person … I better than anyone I agree with the use of the mask and care in all aspects
But I left, I was very disappointed, because in spite of everything I did not see nobody taking the temperature and the security that other hotels such as the NUGGETS and the CEASER had that before taking the temperature they take you and check you with questions … I was one of the that he traveled from new york to that casino almost every week and left a lot of money … but unfortunately that would no longer happen …

  2. Great review. Michael DID have a party in that room. It’s very cool.
I was pleased to meet you at ZorkFest. Hopefully, our paths will cross again!

  3. For some reason the Tropicana is the place that I do well at the craps tables consistently. Now Mark Ostermann will have to come to NJ….

      • A trick I try to use….I wander the tables, looking to see how many chips are on numbers. Lots of chips can mean lots of luck, as only a fool bets lots of money on a cold table. Sometimes I ask people how they are doing at the tables. If it is all cold, I leave. Well, most of the time I leave….when you see or hear a lot of whooping it up at a table someone is doing well. But I agree with you, losing five or six rounds on a $15 table will hasten your departure.
