News & Notes From Around the Web

A number of news items and articles came across my view today that I think would be interesting. Lets find out how to sell on Amazon, get some free points, register for a seminar, pull a plane for charity and say goodbye to Vegas history!

Beginner’s guide to Fulfillment by Amazon: Analyzing and Adding a New Product – The latest in Trevor’s series about getting an account and selling merchandise on Amazon. I have been a casual seller over there for quite a few years, but haven’t done anywhere near the volume of him. Having the ability to sell on Amazon is huge if you are looking to get into that game.

Three Minutes and 15,000 Club Carlson Points! – Deals We Like called into US Bank to complain about the recent changes to the Club Carlson credit card. At first she was denied, but after speaking to a supervisor both her and her husband were offered 7,500 points each. It may be worth a try for some. If only I didn’t hate talking on the phone so much!

Registration for the Chicago Seminars has opened. One of my goals this year is to get to more events, but with a new baby that is going to be tough. The real value in these events is networking and meeting other crazies like yourself. The cost is only $100 for the weekend (October 16-18) which is pretty reasonable I think. Perhaps I’ll make it out there this year. (Note: I am not affiliated with the Chicago Seminars in any way.)

The 60 year old Riviera Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is closing its doors for good next Monday at noon. It is one of the few examples of true “Old Vegas” still left, especially on the Strip. I am considering getting a room there on Sunday night to close the old lady out. What do you think? Would you be interested in seeing photos from the Riv’s last night?

Alaska Airlines is launching three new routes from Seattle going to Nashville, Raleigh/Durham and Charleston. Apparently they are launching a route between Los Angeles and Baltimore as well. Why can’t they just make Las Vegas a focus city and fly from here to everywhere? I really love the airline and have elite status with them, but it seems I rarely get to fly on their metal. Not that you care about that last part. 😉

This weekend is the Freddie Awards in Atlanta, Georgia. The Freddie Awards are like the Oscars for travel loyalty programs. Despite having an invitation to attend, it didn’t work out with my schedule, so I will be sitting at home here in Vegas. A lot of bloggers are going to be there though and many of them are pulling a plane to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Pizza in Motion describes the event and you can donate here! (For the record I am so sad that I am not going to get to pull a plane!)

In case you missed my earlier posts from today, I wrote about deals at Groupon, Staples & Freedompop. I also delved deep into 5 very common miles & points mistakes and why making one of them isn’t the end of the world.

Conclusion

Hopefully you enjoyed some of these items and don’t forget to let me know what you think about the Riviera. Is it worth me staying there to document the end of yet another Vegas historical landmark or does it not really matter?

  1. I’ve never stayed at the Riviera… I stopped there once just to check it out and that was enough for me to know I didn’t want to stay there! Still, if I was in Vegas for the closing I would definitely book a room just to be part of history. I say go for it! I bet it would be a cool experience. Take lots of photos and share!

  2. I enjoy most things Vegas and nostalgia, so would be interesting to see Riviera photos. But the place is, of course, a dump by current strip standards. I was there a couple years ago to see a comedian and wondered who still stays there?! What I’ll miss most is free parking in their lot for big conventions like CES (says to parking attendant “yes I’m here for breakfast” … guess I’ll go buy a cup of coffee …).

  4. I’d like to see pics of the Riviera. I’ll never forget my stay at the Desert Inn 25 years ago. So much history!
