Sears Mastercard 11X Spending Offer

Back in the last century a young kid (my wife) opened up a Sears credit card. Eventually she got married and added her husband to the card and at some point it converted into a Mastercard with a rewards scheme. Then last year (I think) Citi changed our rewards to ThankYou points!

My wife and I keep this account open mainly since it is so old. Unfortunately we don’t/can’t use it often because the limit was slashed by Citi back in 2008 from $5,000 down to $500. That was a common practice with banks at the time since they were worried about people losing their jobs and charging up cards.

So for the most part this card sits in the sock drawer until an amazing offer comes along. Late last night one such deal hit my inbox. It immediately piqued my attention:

Now normally when a deal like this comes along it has a very low cap. This one actually isn’t too bad. It caps out at $1,000 in bonused spend or 10,000 points total. Based on the wording the card will also earn its normal 1X as well.

Note: Some people have the Sears Mastercard that earns Shop Your Way Rewards. That card has 5%/3%/2% bonus categories. The ThankYou version of the card only earns 1X everywhere so I would earn 1,000 points from the normal spend plus a 10,000 point bonus if maxing out this promotion.

It Gets Better

While a 10K cap is not bad, this deal is actually 3X as good! 🙂

The Offer: Earn 10X bonus ThankYou points for total eligible purchases of $300 or more made each month 04/01/17 – 06/30/17 up to a total of 10,000 Bonus Points each month.

Pretty good!

Terms

  • This promotion is not transferable; is only for use with the Sears Mastercard listed in this email; is subject to credit approval and the Citi ThankYou Rewards Terms and Conditions for Sears Card Accounts located at thankyou.com.
  • To qualify for this promotion, you must activate this promotion before the end of the promotional period.
  • You have the opportunity to receive 10X Bonus ThankYou Points (10X Bonus ThankYou Points per dollar spent) on eligible grocery store, gas station and restaurant purchases which total $300 or more (up to a maximum total of 10,000 Bonus ThankYou Points each month) and which are made with your Sears Mastercard between 04/01/17 – 06/30/17.
  • These Bonus ThankYou Points are in addition to the 1 ThankYou Point per $1 spent on purchases that you already earn with your card.

Analysis

Anytime you can earn 11X points in a fairly easy category, then the offer is good. In this case I should be able to earn an easy 33,000 ThankYou points without too much effort. I plan to focus on the grocery category and will try to combine gift card/fuel points promotions to gain even more.

Also remember these ThankYou points can be moved (up to 100K per year) into my ThankYou Premier account and used to book travel at 1.25 cents each. For a couple of more months I could even use them for 1.33 cents each towards airfare (1.6 cents on American Airlines) with my Prestige.

Conclusion

Citi is obviously trying to get greater use out of their Sears card portfolio and I suspect this offer will do the trick. My mother always says, “Any time someone wants to offer you 11X you should take it.” Good advice mom. Good advice.

  1. I’ve been getting this offer for 6 out of the last 9 months (no 1/2017-3/2017). In fact over Labor day weekend I also got a 5X that piggy backed up to $500 spend. It was for anything purchased during a 4 day period. I got myself $500 in gas cards. I haven’t maxed out every time. I probably will only do May and June due to the late date this one was sent out. But it’s still very sweet.

  2. I have the SYWR version. Offer was 5% additional, or 8% total, for groceries this month. Up to $20 reward limit. And the SYWRs expire mid-May. I’m giving it a hard pass.

  3. I received an offer in mail for my Thank You Citi (the no charge downgrade version), 5% back on eligible purchases through 6/30. It shows a shopping cart and says “Online” next to it. Up to 25$ back… there is no language as to what “online” entails however…. I presume its my Double Rewards card, but didn’t bother to investigate. I’d like your Sears offer better.
