Staples Mastercard Gift Card Rebate Deal
I love me some Staples gift card deals. Following a longish drought, they have a Visa gift card deal running this week and are going to follow it up with a Mastercard deal next week. Let’s take a look at the details of the new offer since it is a bit different.
Buy $300 of MasterCard® Gift Cards and get a $20 Staples® Gift Card after easy rebate.
- Valid 3/20/16–3/26/16.
- Limit 1 per customer. (This normally reads one per household. It will be interesting to see how the rebate form is worded.)
- In store only.
Maximizing the Deal
This deal is best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink cards. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores. If you have the recent Amex Offer linked to one of your cards, you can also earn 5% cashback that way as well.
Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math:
- Cost: $413.90
- Minus Rebate: $20
- Final Cost: -$6.10
- UR Points Earned: 2,070
You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.
Mastercard gift cards sold by Staples are issued by U.S. Bank and are pin-enabled. For more info, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards
Liquidate the Staples Gift Card
The rebate for this deal comes in the form of a Staples store gift card. You could sell the gift card for 85% of face value or about $17, or just use it in-store or online when purchasing from Staples. I personally just wait until I need to make a purchase from Staples to use these cards. Unfortunately Staples gift cards cannot be used to purchase other gift cards or stamps.
It is really nice that Staples followed up their Visa gift card deal with one for Mastercards as well. While these aren’t the most lucrative deals given the relatively low limits, they do represent a fairly easy way to generate points and a small profit. For some, liquidating these Mastercards may be tougher than before, but this deal is still going to be solid for many of you.
