Staples Visa Gift Card Rebate Deal
Staples will have negative cost Visa gift card deal coming next week. This $20 rebate is the best of this kind from Staples and you can generate 5X points as well but you could do even better with a targeted Amex Offer. Let’s take a look!
- Get a $20 Visa prepaid card by mail with your Visa gift card purchase of $300 or more.
- Deal valid from 5/21/17 through 5/27/17
- In-store only.
- Limit 1 rebate per name/address/household.
Maximizing the Deal
This deal is usually best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.
Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math:
- Cost: $413.90
- Minus Rebate: $20
- Final Cost: -$6.10
- UR Points Earned: 2,070
You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.
Until 6/15/2017 you can also use an Amex card if you were targeted for the Staples Amex offer that gives you 2,000 MR points on a purchase of $100 or more. So if you purchase $300 worth in Visa gift cards, the math would look like this:
- Cost: $312.90
- Minus Rebate: $20
- Final Cost: -$7.10
- MR Points Earned: 2,313
If you have the Amex Offer on more than one card then you can try doing a split payment and you’ll receive 4,313 MR points instead.
Liquidating Visa Rebate Card
The rebate will come in the form of a Visa gift card that IS pin-enabled. The PIN number is the last four digits of the card number. You can utilize my previous liquidation strategy or simply use it for normal spend.
These deals are nice if you have a Staples nearby, and it’s surprising that they have another deal so soon, since the same deal just ended last week. Stock tends to run out quickly through, especially for the $200 denominations ,so I wouldn’t go far out of the way to get the cards. While this deal won’t make your Ultimate Rewards balance swell too much, it is a way to pickup a chunk of points and a few dollars too. If you have some friends, parents or neighbors that won’t mind you using their address, you can get some extra rebates. This time around some people will also have the Amex Offer as an option, which could be much better.
