United MileagePlus Shopping Bonus

United has been kicking butt with shopping portal promotions this year. In addition to the back to school bonus that other mileage portals participated in, they have run two additional bonus campaigns as well. With today’s new offer, that makes four in just a couple of months. Let’s take a look!

The Offer

Spend $350 between 8/29-9/9 to earn 1,000 bonus miles.

Key Terms

  • Promotion runs from 08/29/16 through 09/09/16 at 11:59:59 pm ET (the “Bonus Period”).
  • Member will earn a one-time bonus of up to 1,000 MileagePlus® bonus award miles on qualifying purchases, in addition to the standard MileagePlus® miles earned from shopping online through the MileagePlus® Shopping mall.
  • This one-time bonus award will be determined based on Member’s cumulative qualifying purchases made during the Bonus Period: 1,000 miles for qualifying purchases of at least $350 or more.
  • “Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus miles.

You can find the full terms here.

Maximizing

This is a great promotion in my opinion because it has a relatively low spending threshold and only one tier. The key to maximizing is finding a store that the MileagePlus portal is competitive in, shop there and cash in your normal payout and your extra 2.85X. I use Cashback Monitor to compare portals to make sure I am getting a good deal.

Since I generally don’t earn a lot of United miles other than through portals (i.e. I don’t pay to fly them), these bonuses are what help my balance grow. Recently I just booked a domestic one-way for my dad on United. Almost all of the miles were earned from the shopping portal with many coming from these types of bonuses.

Conclusion

All of the major mileage portals are run by Cartera, but I don’t see a similar promotion from Delta, American, Alaska or Southwest. Considering that the other mileage programs haven’t had nearly as many bonuses this year, I am not surprised. Hopefully United keeps it up and inspires the others to join in. Happy shopping!

  1. @Shawn – I’ve used the British Airways (USA) shopping site a couple of times, since they’ve come out with a few better than average offers, but the points haven’t posted yet. The oldest is almost 8 weeks, which is longer than normal for Cartera. Have you had or heard of any similar problems?

    • I haven’t, but you should definitely fill out a claim at this point. I know some people have had issues with Cartera in the past, but I haven’t heard of problems recently.
