In October, IHG announced that it would be merging IHG rewards with Kimpton Karma Rewards into one loyalty program. Read here for information on the merge and the benefits for all elite members. IHG members can now use their points to book Kimpton Hotel award stays. What’s even better? You can use your Chase IHG Card’s Free Anniversary Night benefit to stay at any Kimpton. This gives card holders a lot more flexibility and the opportunity to get out sized value from this beloved benefit.

Using Points

IHG recently announced changes to award prices for about 700 hotels, the majority of which increased in price. Award nights now range in price from 10,000-70,000 points (5,000 for IHG Point Breaks). I searched for a few Kimpton hotels to get an idea of how much award nights would cost. My suspicion that Kimpton awards would be near the top of the award chart is confirmed. Of the 4 searches I did, I found Kimpton award nights ranged from 50,000-70,000 points.

Make sure you check cash prices before using all of those points to book a free night because in some instances, I found the cash price to be disproportionately small compared to the number of points IHG wants. For example, the 70,000 point per night Muse Hotel is under $300 to book the same night.

Free Anniversary Night

The ability to book Kimpton using the free anniversary night award gives cardholders a lot more options to get amazing value from the Chase IHG Card. The card has an annual fee of $49 and allows you to book any IHG (and now Kimpton hotel.) I found rates up to $700 at the Kimpton Monaco in Portland, which is a great return on the $49 annual fee.

Conclusion

This is nothing but good news. More options, means more flexibility, which means more chances to save money.

  1. What dates are you looking at in Portland that are $700/night???! I see that property you mentioned both this month and next for only $149/night.

  2. The Kimpton price roll-out confirms my suspicion that IHG raised award costs after a wake-up call from Kimpton.
