Visa Gift Card Instant Rebate

Office Depot Visa Gift Card Rebate

Office Depot and Officemax have a new Visa gift card deal starting Sunday, November 19th. This is one of the best deals they offer. Let’s take a look at the details.

The Offer

  • Save $15 instantly when you buy $300 of Visa® gift cards.

Key Terms

  • Limit one (1) offer per customer.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Offer Valid 11/19/17 to 11/25/17.
  • Offer valid in store on Visa® Gift Cards only.
  •  Visa Gift Card is issued by Metabank.

While the limit of 1 is probably hard-coded into the register, some stores will allow you to do multiple transactions. This varies from store to store and even sometimes from cashier to cashier!

The Math

You can purchase $200 Visa gift cards with a $6.95 fee.

Generally the best option is to purchase 2 of the $200 Visa gift cards. When doing so, the math works out like this:

  • Cost of cards: $413.90
  • Minus instant rebate: -$15
  • Final cost: $398.90
  • Profit: $1.10

Maximize

It is best to pay with a card that earns 5X at office supply stores such as a Chase Ink Cash/Plus. For example, a Chase Ink card would earn 1,995 Ultimate Rewards points besides the $1.10 profitAlternatively, an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores would earn you $19.95 cashback, or a $21.05 profit total.

You can get another $4 through their rewards program which gives you 2% back, but it’s capped at $200 per quarter.

Liquidating

Visa gift cards sold by Officemax/Office Depot are issued by Metabank and are pin-enabled. Thankfully they are generally easier to liquidate than Mastercard gift cards. These cards should work fine to load Bluebird/Serve at Walmart and work many other places. For more detailed information on liquidating these cards, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

Conclusion

This is a great deal to add more Ultimate Rewards points to your balance, especially now that some major online gift card opportunities have dried up. Set e reminder for the 19th. Hopefully you’re able to get the instant discount multiple times at your location.

Happy 5Xing!

  1. I was in on the last deal and my 2% back is not reflected in my account for the numerous cards I purchased. When I called the rewards department they stated that the terms state 2% back is solely on one $200 third party gift card per quarter. Any suggestions on how to refute this? Thank you in advance.

  2. Follow-up to comment above.

This is what they sent me quoting their terms and conditions.

“Members earn 2% back in rewards, without limits, on everything except the following:
    a. earn rewards on up to $200 dollars spent on 3rd party gift cards per quarter,
    b. up to $50 spent on Office Depot® OfficeMax® gift cards per quarter
    c. and up to $75 dollars spent on U.S. postage stamps per quarter”

  3. @Mark Question about Maximizing: Can you buy the Office Depot Visa Gift Card with Office Depot/Office Max gift cards? For example, if you can, you could buy $413.90 worth of discounted gift cards for ~$372 from a discounted gift card website, using a rewards credit card. That’s $372 cost – $15 rebate = $357 final cost = $43 profit, plus whatever you get from your rewards credit card.
