Another Great Staples Gift Card Deal
Staples is running another great gift card deal this coming weekend. In their ad for the week of 12/7-12/13 they are advertising a $15 rebate with the purchase of $100 or more in Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift cards. Lets take a look at the details.
Previous deals have normally offered a $20 rebate with the purchase of $300 or more in gift cards. Since this deal requires a lower purchase amount, you make a little more money, however the credit card rewards are lower overall. Lets take a look at the math.
- Cost of gift card: $105.95 (Including fee.)
- Minus rebate: $15
- Total cost: $90.95
- Profit: $9.05 plus credit card rewards.
If you have a Chase Ink, a better way to do this would be to purchase a $200 card which only costs an additional $1. Doing this will earn an additional 500 points plus the extra $100 in spending will offset the additional $1 fee since you receive a 1% rebate with Visa Savings edge. The math for a $200 card purchased with a Chase Ink card is as follows:
- Cost of gift card: $206.95
- Minus rebate: $15
- Minus Visa Savings Edge: $2.07
- Total Cost: $189.88
- Profit: $10.12
- Total points earned with Ink: 1035
Also, if you received the $20 off $100 Amex Offer on any of your cards last week, then you can stack with this offer to save even more!
Which Cards to Buy
With this deal, I would steer clear of American Express gift cards since they are harder to liquidate. Also, if you plan to use the gift cards to load Bluebird/Serve at a Walmart register, remember that these Mastercards tend to show up as credit in their POS system which can cause the transaction to fail.
In my opinion it is best to purchase the Visa gift cards which are issued by Meta Bank. These cards can easily be loaded to Bluebird or Serve and have the least amount of issues. Additionally, the pin is the last four of the card number, meaning it does not need to be manually set.
Terms & Drawbacks
As you can see, there is a small profit to be made along with some free points if you have a Chase Ink card. With that said there are a couple of drawbacks.
- Limit 1 per household.
- The rebate is in the form of a Staples gift card.
In the end, this is a great deal, but not one lucrative enough to go far out of your way for. Some people have had success using both home and office addresses for rebates along with addresses of trusted friends or family members. Good luck!
