American Express Payments Return to Plastiq

American Express Payments Return to Plastiq

Plastiq is a great way for many to rack up large amounts of points and to easily complete minimum spend requirements.  This is particularly important for American Express cards since they recently changed their rules and no longer allow gift cards to count towards minimum spend. Plastiq was a legit way to put large amounts of spend on your American Express cards and get around their RAT team.  That was great until a little while ago when Amex cards stopped working on Plastiq.  Good news…they are back…kind of.

Using Amex Cards on Plastiq

Plastiq was able to bring American Express back into the fold as a payment partner but it is in a limited role.  You can now use Amex cards on Plastiq for the following payments:

  • Residential Rent
  • Government Payments
  • Education
  • Utilities
  • Club fees and memberships

These are limited options and they are missing the most desired payment – mortgage payments.  Plastiq removed the ability to pay mortgages back in June for Visa cards and then in September for Amex cards.

Conclusion

It is welcomed news to see American Express as an option again at Plastiq.  It gives us another way to meet minimum spend that should be ok with the RAT team. I know we all wish mortgage payments would have returned with it.  Something is always better than nothing though.

  1. Does anybody know if payment to a contractor would work? Trying to make a min spend and repair my roof. First time using plastiq so a bit unsure how everything works.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. At the Chicago seminars a couple of the speakers were doing gift cards for points on various Amex cards. Not sure if it was the ones earning MR points or not.

My mortgage on Plastiq is setup as Rent/Real Estate. The categories one can choose are Bus. Services, Clubs, Education, Government, Rent/Realestate.

If rent is OK now with AMEX, how would they know if it was Rent or Mortgage, if classified like Rent/Real Estate, anymore than my car payment that has the same classification.

I added a Payee in a hurry and did not pick a classification and Plastiq assigned “Personal Services” and Chase saw that as a cash transaction. It was for some real estate matters. No matter how much complaining to Chase, they would not reconsider and I paid interest and fees. Bad lesson to learn.

    • Thanks for the info Byron. I would guess they would know it was a mortgage because of who the payment goes to. But I am sure Plastiq would be the one stopping it since Amex told them no more.

  3. Is anyone being successful buying giftcards just to build ongoing points on a Amex Card? I undertand the minimum spend requirement not to meet with giftcards is against rules, but I would sure like to know others experience for the ongoing spend to add points to your account.

    • It is in their terms that they can shut all of your accounts down for doing this even on regular spend. I don’t think they have done it yet but something to be cautious of.
