Amex Blue for Business

Amex Blue for Business New Bonus Offer

The Amex Blue for Business card just had a great signup bonus that expired on February 22nd and now they’ve released a new one. This one is different, offering 3x on $5K spend and it doesn’t have the restaurant bonus category for the first six months.

The Offer

Let’s take a look at this new public offer which is being advertised as 25,000 Membership Rewards points:

  • Earn 10,000 points after making your first purchase on the Card within your first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • Earn an additional 15,000 points after you spend $5,000 in purchases on the Card, in the first 6 months of Card Membership.

Card Features

  • 1X Membership Rewards® point for each dollar you spend on eligible purchases.
  • Get a 30% annual points bonus based on the past year’s purchases on your Blue for Business Card.
  • No annual fee

Points Earned

Blue for Business is a Membership Rewards card, but it only earns basic MR points. So even though the bonus is advertised as MR points, you earn points that cannot be transferred to their mileage program partners. Thankfully there is an easy workaround. If you have any other Membership Rewards card that has the ability to transfer (Platinum, Gold, Everyday, etc.) then your points are pooled and you can transfer them. This makes the bonus here potentially very valuable.

Offer Analysis

This offer really comes in two parts. The first part is the base bonus. This is the same as the previous bonus which is 10K points. Not great, but not bad for a no annual fee card and it only requires one purchase of any amount.

Then, we have the 15,000 points after you spend $5,000 in purchases in 6 months. That works out to 3x on all purchases and you have lots of time to complete it. I assume most people can hit that.

How Does It Compare To Previous Offer

Personally I like the offer that just ended on 2/22 better. I do a decent amount of spend on restaurants, so I can easily maximize the $2,000 for 20,000 MR points. If you were really eyeing that part of the offer, take a look at the Blue Cash cards, which are offering the same thing.

I also like better the 2x MR on $50K for a full year, instead of 3x MR on $5K for 6 months. But I might be biased here, since I already picked up the card.

Conclusion

While the Blue for Business card is probably a niche product, for those who are invested in Membership Rewards it can be a great no annual fee business card. Even after the initial bonus, it is worth keeping, considering the value that Amex Offers add in as well.
