Are Lounge Certs Worthless For Hyatt Globalist Members?

World of Hyatt recently changed the way they reward members who are earning status.  They broke the perks earning based on stays instead of strictly status level. This was done for two reasons, first it eliminates people who get status via match from using the valuable perks. Second, it sets milestones along the way rewarding members as they go to keep them engaged.  For example, now you can earn lounge access before even reaching Explorist status.  If you are in no mans land between Explorist and Globalist you can still earn bonus points at 40 nights and 2 suite upgrades at 50 nights.

Even if you can’t get all the way to 60 nights there are pursuits worth going for past 30 nights etc. One byproduct of this is that Globalist members earn lounge access certificates even though they already get lounge access. But are lounge certs worthless for Hyatt Globalist members? There is at least one way you can use them that adds some value.

Why Would Lounge Certs Be Worthless?

Some may be wondering why lounge access would be worthless for anyone.  If you have already earned Globalist status then you already get lounge access during your stays.  Therefore as you are working towards Globalist status again this year there is no need for the certs since you already have access from last year’s status.

Since these are kind of worthless to people who already have top tier status people have let them expired unused over the years.  It would be cool if World of Hyatt would allow you to gift these certificates to others but that is not the case. You are not allowed to use them on bookings for other people.

Plus with Globalist Guest of Honor bookings Globalists can gift their status to friends and family on award bookings anyway.

Is There Any Value Here?

Using them for or gifting them to other people is out, Guest of Honor bookings cover award stays so where is the value? There is one situation where a Globalist member can use a lounge access cert for friends and family, when they book two or more paid rooms.

Globalist status is supposed to only extend to one room per stay.  Many times properties will overlook these terms and allow it to extend to all rooms.  Or some may allow a 2pm checkout on the second room as a courtesy instead of the 4pm checkout that Globalists should get etc. But the truth is the perks are not guaranteed to extend to more than the room the Globalist member is staying in. That means lounge access is not guaranteed.

If you are worried about it or want to ensure you use the perks at a place where it will save you money, like Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, then you can use the lounge access cert on the second room.  This was confirmed by PDX Deals Guy with Hyatt concierge.

Conclusion

This is a very specific use but I thought that some Globalists would find it interesting.  If you use the lounge access perk when you are booking more than one cash room it can bring you some value.  Especially when you are traveling with another couple or extended family etc. Don’t just let them expire because you think they are completely worthless.

  1. I’ve always gotten my Globalist status recognized on the second room. Honestly, I’ve never even imagined IT COULD be denied on 2nd room. That’s why I love Hyatt though. Don’t need to ‘game’ the rules. They just take care of you.
