Chase Adds AerLingus and Iberia as Transfer Partners

News broke today that Chase has added two new airlines to their list of Ultimate Rewards transfer partners, sort of.  Aer Lingus’ AerClub and Iberia’s Iberia Plus are now a part of the Ultimate Rewards team.  This addition was somewhat expected because both airlines are a part of the same company as British Airways, a long time Chase partner.  These two additions bring Chase’s airline transfer partners to 13.

Should We Care

It is always good to have more options. These are a little underwhelming additions to me since you were already able to transfer UR points to Iberia via transferring them to British Airways first.  This does take a step out of that process though which is always welcomed.

It has also been possible to book Aer Lingus flights using BA Avios for a while now. So I question if adding Aer Lingus as a partner really adds any value. There is also a big difference in the most popular redemption – Boston to Dublin. Boston to Dublin is considered a Zone 3 flight with British Airways versus a Zone 4 flight with Aer Lingus.  Meaning that booking the flight via BA will cost you less Avios.  It looks like taxes and fees are higher booking via Aer Lingus on shorter flights too.

Conclusion

While it is nice to see more partners added this seems to be more of a formality instead of Chase actively looking to add value to their program.  This was expected once British Airways purchased the other two companies.  I don’t see this as making our Ultimate Rewards points any more valuable.
