My Plan For Chase Freedom First Quarter Categories

The Chase Freedom first quarter categories were sent out by Chase last week and it is now possible to activate it.  Activating should become available in the next week or so. Even though we can’t lock it in yet I wanted to go over the Chase Freedom’s first quarter categories and then share my game plan for it.

Chase Freedom’s 1st Quarter Categories

There are quite a few options for this quarter although most of them are already covered by other cards.  They are as follows:

  • Gas stations
  • Select streaming services
  • Internet, cable and phone services

Nothing too sexy but there is a little meat on the bone.

My Game Plan For Q1

The Chase Freedom card is my oldest card and one that I think everyone should have because it is an easy way to rack up 5X earning.  If you have a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Ink Preferred you can turn your cash back into Ultimate Rewards points.  You can then use them via the Chase travel portal or transfer them to travel partners which unlock better redemptions.

Having said that I am not overly excited by this first quarter list.  The streaming services, internet, cable and phone services are already covered by the Chase Ink Cash.  If you don’t have a Ink Cash then this could be useful to you but it isn’t useful for me so I am skipping those all together.

Gas stations will be my focus in quarter one.  My wife and I actually spend quite a bit on fuel, she drives a lot for work.  So that will knock out half of the $1500 on its own.  What should I do for the rest though?

I am hopeful that Speedway will have one of their amazing deals which would make the rest of the spend needed easily achievable.  Another option is that some 7-11 stores code as a gas station for Visa’s network even if they don’t sell fuel.  You could also hit a grocery store’s gas station and buy gift cards to be used on groceries inside the store.

Final Thoughts

Having gas as the Chase Freedom first quarter category is one of the better options for me.  If you don’t own a car or have access to the other locations mentioned above then this one is a real clunker for you.  Hopefully you can use one of tips I discussed to max out the quarter even if you don’t drive much. If not then you should be able to rack up some points on your cell service or streaming plans if you don’t already have a Chase Ink Cash.

Let’s hope for grocery stores in quarter 2!
