Chase Sapphire Reserve Changes Devaluations

Chase Sapphire Reserve Changes Devaluations

Earlier this week we got some news that there are some negative changes coming to the Chase Sapphire Reserve card (while it hasn’t been confirmed, the news seems very reliable). Last week we covered another rumor that Chase was considering eliminating our ability to pool Ultimate Rewards Points between accounts, which would be awful. Anyways, with all these rumors going around, I wouldn’t worry too much about the likely upcoming changes because they really just aren’t that big of a deal.

The news out of Chase hasn’t been all bad lately. In fact, the past month or so we’ve seen some incredible sign up bonuses from them on cards like the Ink Cash, Ink Preferred and Sapphire Preferred (click each card for our review.)

Details of Changes

  • Price Protection Benefit is Going Away
  • Priority Pass Membership will now be limited to two free guests, you’ll have to pay for additional guests.
  • You will no longer earn 3x UR’s on the $300 in travel purchases reimbursed by the travel credit. (So you’ll lose out on 900 Ultimate Rewards Points.)

Analysis

As you can see, the changes are unlikely to affect many people and if they do, it should be minimal. I do think the Priority pass changes could be a hit to families who regularly travel with more than 3 people. As far as the loss of price protection, I believe it’s an underutilized benefit and probably an easy way for Chase to cut costs without affecting too many people. Last, 900 UR points are worth between $10 and $35 (if you’re a pro) so while it’s never fun to lose out on free points, it’s not such a big deal. It’s still a generous travel credit and earning structure on paid purchases.

Unfortunately, devaluations seem to be the trend lately and hopefully the train stops here. Shawn wrote an interesting piece about this current trend a few weeks ago: Stealth Credit Card Devaluations: Is This the New Normal?
