UPDATE: Reports in our Facebook group are that more people are receiving targeted email upgrade offers and many of these are for 50,000 points.  Be sure to check for the email if you didn’t upgrade last time around.

The new Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Card went live yesterday and existing card members are eligible to receive an upgrade offer. Doctor of Credit reported yesterday that members are receiving between 0 and 50,000 points to upgrade to the new card, which has an increased annual fee of $95, up $10 from the previous version. Check out our review of the new Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Card, which also has a nice breakdown of the differences between the existing version and the Plus.

If you have a Marriott Rewards Card you can check your upgrade offer here. I tried this for both the Business as well as the personal version and no surprise that it only worked for personal.

My Offer

It seems the offers are all over the place. Doc reported they range from nothing to 50k points. My offer was for 20,000 bonus points after upgrading and making a single purchase by 12/31/18. You can also take advantage of this offer until 12/31/18, which is a pretty generous window to decide what you’d like to do.

Conclusion

It’s hard to say whether you should take the upgrade offer since there are a few unknown key factors. Considerations include: how the annual fee will be charged, will your elite credits disappear since it seems they won’t be available on the Premier Plus card until 2019 and will there perhaps be a better upgrade offer if you wait it out. You cannot receive the sign-up bonus on this card if you have the current Marriott Rewards card or you received the bonus in the last 24 months, so I’m curious if you were to take advantage of the upgrade points and still cancel when you’re close to 24 months.

If you don’t have the existing Marriott Rewards Card is is still available, so if you prefer it to the new one, I’d sign up ASAP. Remember this card is subject to 5/24 and the 24 month bonus restriction. Check out our Guide to 5/24 for complete details.

I’d love to hear what you all are thinking or planning on doing in the comments section.

  1. I received the 50K offer email. But when I click on it to apply for the upgrade I get ” Thank You We are sorry. We are unable to process your request at this time. For further assistance, please call the number on the back of your card.” I called chase and the CSR had no answer. He suggested I call Marriott Rewards to confirm that if I upgrade I will get the 50K.

  2. I got the email about upgrading but only have the Business Premier Plus card. Wondering how I was targeted if I don’t even have the card?

  3. I got the email offer for 50k points after one purchase.
I hope my anniversary date stays the same as it lines up well with my SPG card.

  4. Do the new “plus” cards still get an elite night credit for $3000 spend? I’m not even sure if that’s part of any of the cards anymore. Anyone know?

    • My question as well Larry, also seems like a chance it will generate 15 nights after the first even if you have an AMEX, there must be a reason they want the cards moved.

  5. FYI – This just worked for both myself and my husband. Only 10K offers to each of us but T&Cs note that we’ll get a one time $95 credit since we opened the cards less than a year ago.

  6. I received the 20K points upgrade offer also for my personal card. I think I also just received my free anniversary night (category 1-5 since I’ve had this card for years). With that said, I assume I’ll get the 35K anniversary night next year? It’s it safe to say that we probably won’t get it until one year from the upgrade date even if we didn’t get the free night yet?
