Discounted Gift Cards on eBay and How to Combine with Amex Offers

eBay has a number of gift cards on sale today. Most of the items on sale are probably only good for personal use, but a couple may have some reselling potential. Let’s take a look.

eBay Gift Card Deal Basics

All of the gift cards on sale should earn 1-2% through your chosen portal. You will also earn 2% in eBay Bucks on your purchase. The cards sold by PayPal Digital Gifts should also earn 5X Ultimate Rewards points if you pay with a Chase Ink card through PayPal.

Reselling Opportunity – Breakdown

Updated: The Saks cards are out of stock, but there are other opportunities and the Newegg Amex Offer tie-in is still valid. I recommend reading through even though the Saks cards are gone.

Perhaps the best reselling opportunity among all of these cards are the $50 Saks Off 5th Avenue cards for $40. You can purchase 4 of these cards which are interchangeable with regular Saks cards. SaveYa is buying them digitally for 84.1%. Let’s look at the math:

  • Cost of cards: $160
  • eBay Bucks earned: $3.20
  • 2% portal: $3.20
  • Final cost: $153.60
  • 84.1% proceeds: $168.20
  • Profit: $14.60 plus rewards (including a possible 5X with Ink.)

There are other cards which you can eek out a profit, but those are by far the best. To see which cards might work, simply visit Gift Card Wiki and search sales rates.

Juicing it Up with Amex Offers

If you have the Newegg Amex Offer on any of your cards, you might be able to do better. Newegg sells $200 eBay gift cards. With the Amex Offer you can get one for $175. That is a 12.5% discount off of face value. Keep in mind these $200 cards go in and out of stock and you are limited to using $5K in eBay gift cards during a rolling 6 month period.

I have been stocking up on $200 eBay gift cards from Newegg since you can only purchase 2 per day. Here is a purchase I just made. I kept it right at $200 to keep things simple.

  • 4 X Saks Off 5th Avenue Cards: $160
  • 1 X Jiffy Lube card: $40
  • Total Cost: $200 (-$25 Amex Offer) = $175
  • Sales price of Saks cards at 84.1%: $168.20
  • Sales price of Jiffy Lube card at 76%: $38
  • eBay Bucks earned: $4
  • Portal cashback earned: $4
  • Total revenue: $214.20
  • Minus cost: $175
  • Profit: $39.20

There are of course other cards you could purchase and/or just buy the Saks cards. I used this example since I ended up with $0 on the eBay gift card (so I don’t need to keep track of it) and it is easy to show money in and out with a flat $200 purchase.

Conclusion

There is definitely some opportunity with today’s eBay deals. I have shown you some possibilities, but I’m sure you can find more if you look a little harder. Does a post like this help or would you prefer me to simply show you the deals? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Hav not been able to find ebay gcs on Newegg except for $5 or $25 denominations. Can you let me know if there is a trick to this?

  2. What portal are you using to get 2% back for Ebay purchases? Splender states no cash back for gift card purchases. ShopAtHome has just added new rule for no cash back for gift card purchases. What is not clear is whether or not that means Ebay gift card purchases or ALL gift card purchases.

  3. 2 things about the newegg offer it seems portals are working! (as of now) also i have successfully bought 2x$200,2x$100, 2x$150 and $50 and $75×2 +$50 of eBay cards within the same 48 hour period

  4. Excellent post. I’m new to this MS game and looking for different avenues to use and this helps me get going in the right direction. Thanks once again and keep up the great works with all your posts, they are greatly appreciated.

  5. These posts are very helpful in looking at things from a new angle for me (ie, stacking various opportunities). The model has helped me identify if other opportunities were viable for me. I also appreciate the hints. I find that I am getting better at figuring them out!

    • The Visa gift cards have fees. I spend enough on eBay anyway that this makes sense for me. I have a lot of Amex cards, so this isn’t my only Newegg strategy, but I have been picking up the $200 cards when I can. For me, getting 12.5% or more (hint) off eBay gift cards is a good place to start.
