Hotel Tonight This Week?
I have written quite a bit about Hotel Tonight on this website. (Reviews 01, 02, 03) The main reason for my enthusiasm is that I have had nothing but great experiences booking hotels through the app. In my experience, the properties are accurately described and most importantly the booking process is as simple as I have seen.
For those who are unaware, Hotel Tonight is an app which allows people to book hotel rooms starting at 9am for same-day check-in. According to Tnooz, the company will start beta-testing very soon to allow users to book rooms up to seven days in advance.
A Need To Grow
I am sure this move has to be driven by a need to grow their business. While I am a huge fan of the service, there have been times where I was not comfortable waiting until the last day to book a room. By opening up their booking until seven days out, they are seemingly opening up the service to many more customers and giving their already loyal customers more flexibility to book.
The Tnooz article references PhoCuzWright who estimates that about $40 billion in hotel bookings will be done on mobile apps in 2015. In total, that is about 25% of the market. Only so many of those people will be willing or able to book hotels on the same-day. My guess is that this change will bring a huge influx of business.
Is This A Good Thing
I think this is a wonderful move for Hotel Tonight. As someone who has often found their rates to be lower than other OTAs, I welcome an expansion of their service. This change is also good for consumers, since they will be adding more competition to the marketplace, meaning services such as Priceline and their “Express Deals” will have pressure to offer better rates.
