Office Depot Deal Just Got More Profitable! – Last Day for This $$$ Maker

Office Depot and OfficeMax stores have a promotion on Visa gift cards. It started on 7/29 and today is the last day to take advantage of it. What’s interesting about this promotion, is that it is twice as good as advertised. It’s an easy moneymaker.

The Offer

The promotion is advertised as:

  • Buy $300 or more in select Visa Gift Cards, save $10 instantly.

But you can actually get a $20 discount. That is because the $10 instant discount is coming off twice. To trigger the extra $10 discount, enter your Office Depot rewards number. You will receive a total of $20 when you purchase $300 or more in Visa gift cards.

Key Terms

  • Limit one (1) offer per customer.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Offer valid 7/29/18 through 8/4/18
  • Offer valid in store on Visa® gift cards only.

The Math

You can purchase $200 Visa gift cards with a $6.95 fee.

Generally the best option is to purchase 2 of the $200 Visa gift cards. When doing so, the math works out like this:

  • Cost of cards: $413.90
  • Minus instant rebate: -$20
  • Final cost: $393.90
  • Profit: $6.10

Maximize

It is best to pay with a card that earns 5X at office supply stores such as a Chase Ink Cash/Plus. For example, a Chase Ink Plus/Cash card would earn 1,970 Ultimate Rewards pointsAlternatively, an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores would earn you $19.70 cashback.

Liquidating

Normal Visa gift cards sold by Officemax/Office Depot are issued by Metabank and are pin-enabled. These cards should work fine to load Serve at Walmart and work many other places. For more detailed information on liquidating these cards, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

Conclusion

This good deal just got a lot better. With a $20 discount, you make an instant profit  and you get your free credit card rewards or cashback. Today is the last day to take advantage of this offer and hopefully you can still find gift cards in stock.

  1. I bought several sets of 2 X 200 VGCs yesterday at OD and gave my rewards number. Only one of the sets showed a $20 discount. The rest showed $10. Yet when I did the same transactions at OM, all of the sets showed a $20 discount. I can’t figure out why the difference. Can you?

  2. I’ve taken advantage of this deal 15 times so far and each time I’ve gotten at least $20 back, but about 1/3 of the time I’ve gotten $30 back, for unknown reasons. I would also note that I’ve bought either Style Everywhere or Dining Everywhere cards that carry only a $4.95 fee to make the deal even more lucrative. I haven’t had a problem using them to buy money orders at Walmart yet, though I’ve read on FlyerTalk that some folks have had difficulty at certain types of WM stores. Good luck to all on this last day

  3. Been doing this all week…every time the associate hits escape button after you provide your rewards account number $10 goes off…

  4. I bought three sets of $200 cards yesterday. They rang it all up at once and gave me a total $10 discount. They said it was only $10 discount per transaction and that I could not have purchased them separately. They said if I had tried to ring them up separately, it would have rejected the $10 discount.

    • It is one discount per $300 so you would have had to buy 2 and then 2 and you would have gotten $20 in credits – $10 on each transaction.

  5. Sometimes you just need to experiment. Two different OM, tried different combinations to trigger the $20 off. $10 off the first store, but $20 off the second (where multiple purchases are allowed – YMMV). No rhyme or reason as far as I could tell.
