Office Depot Visa Gift Card Deal

This morning Staple’s advertised fee-free Visa promotion began and apparently Office Depot/Officemax want to join in on the fun as well with a profitable promotion. Let’s take a look.

The Offer

  • Buy $300 or more in select Visa Gift Cards, save $15 instantly. Offer good on the Fuel Everywhere, Grocery Everywhere, Dining Everywhere, Movies Everywhere and Style Everywhere cards.

Key Terms

  • Limit one (1) offer per customer.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Offer valid 5/6/18-5/12/18
  • In-store only

While the limit of 1 is probably hard-coded into the register, some stores will allow you to do multiple transactions. This varies from store to store and even sometimes from cashier to cashier!

The Math

You can purchase $200 Everywhere Visa gift cards with a $4.95 fee.

Generally the best option is to purchase 2 of the $200 Visa gift cards. When doing so, the math works out like this:

  • Cost of cards: $409.90
  • Minus instant rebate: -$15
  • Final cost: $394.90
  • Profit: $5.10

Maximize

It is best to pay with a card that earns 5X at office supply stores such as a Chase Ink Cash/Plus. For example, a Chase Ink card would earn 1,975 Ultimate Rewards pointsAlternatively, an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores would earn you $19.75 cashback.

Liquidating

Everywhere Visa gift cards sold by Officemax/Office Depot are issued by Metabank and are pin-enabled. These cards only work at the type of retailer mentioned in the card name. Many of the types of cards work at Walmart, but it’s best to know what you are doing with the particular flavor you purchase before going in too deep on buying these.

Conclusion

Between fee-free Visas at Staples, this deal and a number of other amazing Mother’s Day gift card deals, this has turned out to be an amazing week for those among us who like to purchase gift cards. I’m just sad I’ll be traveling for most of this week. 🙁

  1. “Many of the types of cards work at Walmart…” I disagree, from my experience and other data points, only Grocery and Style Everywhere cards work at Walmart.

    • I have also had success with Grocery & Dining, but only at select locations. You’ll notice my verbiage is vague (as in I don’t mention any type that absolutely works) and I urge people to discover what works for themself because I don’t want people buying these cards in large volume unless they know they can liquidate.

    • NO, it has to go through ACH transfer to be considered direct deposit. If you link a bank account and transfer money from it, that’ll work as direct deposit. Some banks will do trial deposits before you can transfer money and this takes a few days but once you verify those trial deposits, you can transfer money immediately to your GoBank acct.
