Maximizing Deal

Update: For more ideas on how to maximize, see: Negative Cost Office Depot Mastercard Deal: Scalable & One of the Best Deals of the Year!

This deal is best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.

Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase one $100 Mastercard gift card. Here is the math:

Cost: $105.95
Instant Savings: $20
Final Cost: -$14.05
UR Points Earned: 430

About the Mastercard Gift Cards

Mastercard gift cards issued by U.S. Bank and the PIN is in the packaging. You can also reset the PIN by calling the number on the back. These can be used as PIN-enabled debit cards at various grocery stores, etc., but using them at Walmart can be tricky since the POS system recognizes them as credit. To get around that you need to quickly change the payment type on the POS screen, but newer versions of the system make it difficult. If you plan to use them at Walmart, YMMV.

This is a great deal and definitely worth doing if you have a location nearby. Make sure that the offer is posted at your location before purchasing. Two rebates will trigger in the same transaction if you make a purchase of $100+ in eligible gift cards.

    • Thanks. Which denominations do they carry? Would make sense if you’re getting 5x with Ink to just go ahead and purchase the largest denomination possible (assuming the fee only increases by a buck or so).

      • @JP –

For the Mastercards only (as retail gift cards can be loaded with any amount) basically you are looking at a Fixed $100 card ($5.95 fee) or a variable load ($20-$200) with a $6.95 fee.

I agree that the $200 maximum load onto a Mastercard is the way to go…from there you have other options as Shawn mentions in his follow-up post (and I highlight with examples and strategies on my post)

  1. Thanks.

Do you get $40 off if you buy two $100 MC gift cards at the same time or do they need to be desperate transactions?

  2. What prevents one from getting the $20 savings over multiple purchases at different stores, different days? In other words, how is the household limit enforced? Is it by credit card used?

  3. Just went into a local OM and they said the deal was OVER…no signage (they took it down this AM) and when they rang up a $100 MC, no discount taken off form the register. Got 2 on Tuesday. Has anyone else seen this? How/Who best to complain to?

Wasn’t sure if this was a “normal” occurrence with them, or can one off stores do that? Thanks
