Day 32 – Savannah, Georgia

We are a little excited over here at Coomer Family World Adventures. Yesterday marked the one month milestone for us on the road and today is the 21st day that we have been in Florida. It is no surprise then, that we woke up this morning ready to leave Florida behind. After eating and gassing the car up, we got on the road at 11:30am. The drive up to Savannah was nothing out of the ordinary. We did enjoy the Georgia sign as it offers something different from the standard fare.

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia. It was originally a British colony founded in the 1700’s. During the civil war, Georgia seceded from the union and joined the confederacy and Savannah went along with it. General Sherman in his attack march through Georgia during the civil war, decided to spare Savannah from destruction and instead presented the city to president Abraham Lincoln for Christmas in 1864. I am glad that he did.

We didn’t get to see much of Savannah today. When we arrived at 2pm we headed straight for the visitor’s center to gather more information. After looking through the many brochures, we found a tour of Savannah’s historical district that we wanted to do. Unfortunately, we arrived to late in the day for the tour so it will have to wait until tomorrow morning. The one thing we were able to do today, was visit the Savannah Historical Museum that is housed in the same building as the visitor’s center.

Jasmine and I both thought that the museum was a bit disappointing. It did have some historical artifacts, but for the most part, they didn’t have anything to do with Savannah. The museum had quite a few exhibits on display that showed how life was during certain periods of time, but life would’ve been similiar most places in the south. I guess I wanted to see more historical artifacts from Savannah’s history. They did have a 20 minute film which provided an excellent overview of Savannah’s history though. The video certainly made the experience worthwhile.

After our quick walk through the museum, it was still a while before night fall so we headed over to Tybee Island which is about 20 miles away from Savannah. Tybee Island is a coastal town and consists mostly of resorts dotted along the expansive sand beach. It also has the oldest lighthouse in Georgia. We stopped in at their library so Shawn Reece could practice his reading before heading out to a fort that we saw off of the road on the way out.

Fort Pulatski is a National Monument that we honestly had no idea existed. It was built in the 1800’s and served as a battleground during the civil war. We were able to tour the grounds of the fort which has been restored and is in excellent condition. The stairs led us to the upper level where we felt like soldiers readying our cannons for fire. The whole fort is surrounded by a moat of foggy water. The one thing I knew, was that I wouldn’t want to fall into it. We loved this place so much, but we arrived at the fort about 30 minutes before closing so we didn’t have a lot of time to learn about it’s history. We did find out that the northern troops took the fort in a fierce battle during the civil war. Apparently they attacked the fort from Tybee Island which is about a mile and a half away. Shortly after we toured the upper level, the park ranger yelled “The Fort Is Closed” and we had to leave.

After scurrying out of the fort, (we didn’t want to get locked in) we got in the car and headed for our hotel. Our hotel is in a little town calleds Hardeeville, South Carolina. It is just across the border from Savannah. The one thing I can say about Hardeeville is that we dined at the worst Mexican restaurant ever! With the addition of the two states of Georgia and South Carolina today, we have officially hit the 10 state mark so far on this trip. Tomorrow we are going to tour the Savannah Historical District in the morning before heading up to Atlanta. The architecture in Savannah is delightful and I am sure I will have some great pictures to share with you next time. I am looking forward to it!

We want to thank everyone for the comments and emails. Your support is truly appreciated and keeps us going.
