Platinum Delta Skymiles Business Card

Amex Platinum Delta Business Card 70K Bonus Returns

American Express usually offers increased bonuses for their Delta cards a few times per year.  They just doubled the welcome bonus on their Platinum Delta Skymiles Business card to 70,000 miles. The offer is good until 7/31/18.  The bonus is set up a little differently this time around though.

Offer Terms

Remember that American Express has once per lifetime language with their cards.  If you have had this card in the past you are not eligible for the bonus.  The bonus terms are as follows:

  • Earn 35,000 bonus miles and 5,000 (MQMs) after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months.
  • Earn 5 miles per dollar on eligible purchases with your new Card during the first 6 months of Card Membership, up to 35,000 bonus miles.
    • Essentially you can earn 35,000 miles after completing $7,000 in spend. You earn the 5 miles per dollar on whatever spend you complete even if you fall short of $7,000.
  • Earn a $100 statement credit after you make a Delta purchase with your new Card within your first 3 months.  A $3 snack purchase on a Delta flight works ;).
  • Offer ends 7/31/18.
  • The $195 annual fee is NOT waived the first year

Conclusion

Increased offers are always great and 70,000 miles puts this right up there with the American Airlines offer for their business card.

  1. 1) What options would you use to meet the $7k spend requirement besides organic spend?

    2) Is it too risky to purchase VGCs to meet the minimum spend? Possible claw back of the bonus by Amex?

    • It is probably too risky to purchase VGC’s for Amex cards when meeting min spend. If you resell 3rd party gift cards at all that hasn’t been an issue so far. Reselling concert tickets or merchandise is another option.

      • 1) There are no issues purchasing a 3rd party gift card to meet min spend on an Amex at say Walmart for example?

        2) How does Amex know when a customer is purchasing a VGC vs. a 3rd party gift card at Walmart?

        • They are able to get data on purchases from certain retailers although I am not sure which ones. If they see a pattern of high spend at certain stores I am guessing they dig deeper.

I have mixed in PPDG, Newegg etc. 3rd party gift cards with regular purchases and it has been ok but that only makes up 25-35% of my spend. I wouldn’t go crazy with it.

  2. Is there any way to apply for a bussines card without having an official bussiness and tax ID? Such as being an Uber or Lyft driver technically its self employment or being a sitter child or pet (Rover) using your home as a bussiness or any other loop holes?
The card application asks for Business name and your Tax ID.

    • Yeah you apply as a sole proprietor and use your social security number as the tax id. You can just put your name as the business name if you are an Uber driver etc.
