SelfScore Rebrands as Deserve

SelfScore Rebrands as Deserve

SelfScore came into the market looking to serve what they believed to be an underutilized customer, international students.  In the past international students had an issue getting credit because they did not have a social security number or any credit history.

SelfScore recently raised an additional $12 million in funding and rebranded themselves as Deserve.  They released 3 new card offerings at the same time so let’s take a look at each one in detail.

Deserve Classic

The Deserve Classic is designed for those who are new to credit and want to build a credit history. It does not require a security deposit or a co-signer.  The card details are as follows:

  • $39 Annual fee
  • Credit limit up to $1500
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Social Security Number (SSN) required
  • No rewards

I don’t really see the purpose with this card.  No rewards, low limits, an annual fee, and it requires a SSN.  If you have a SSN you would be better off getting a standard student credit card with a rewards system.

Deserve Edu

The Deserve Edu is designed to help college students build their credit history and enjoy great benefits while they are doing it. It includes Amazon Prime Student with Free 2-Day shipping, prime video, and prime music, and it provides 1% cash back on all purchase.  The card details are as follows:

  • No annual fee
  • Credit limit up to $5000
  • 1% back on all purchases
  • Amazon Prime Student (sign up bonus – promotional offer)
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • SSN not required

Compared to the Deserve Classic this is a much better offer. It is a excellent for international students who do not have a SSN.  Adding in Amazon Prime Student is a nice touch.  In order to be eligible for this card as an international student you need to have these things:

Deserve Pro

The Deserve Pro is designed for those who have already established a credit history, featuring higher credit limits and more cash back on the things that matter to you: 3% cash back on travel and entertainment, 2% cash back on restaurants, and 1% cash back on all other purchases. The card details are as follows:

  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Up to $10,000 credit limit
  • No sign up bonus
  • SSN required
  • It has the following earning rates
    • 3% back on travel and entertainment
    • 2% back at restaurants
    • 1% back on everything else

Not really anything to write home about.  If the student already has a SSN and credit history they would be better off getting something like the new Uber card.  The Deserve Pro could be a possible product change option, from the Deserve EDU, since it offers better earning rates.

Conclusion

The Deserve EDU is the crown jewel of the new credit card offers.  The EDU is aimed at an under served market, and it comes with decent rewards and perks for international students.  The other cards are pretty much worthless.
