Holiday Shopping Portal Referral & Sign-Up Bonuses
Every year we hear on the news how more and more people are shopping online and it’s true. You know what else is true? Too many of them go directly to a website instead of using a shopping portal. Such wasteful behavior! Well, in an effort to gain people’s business, several shopping portals are holding referral promotions good through the end of the year. Let’s take a look!
Ebates $100 for 3 Referrals
Ebates is perhaps the most well known portal. They always offers $5 per referral, but have upped the ante through the end of the year. Right now in addition to the $5, they will give you an $85 bonus after just 3 referrals. There are some terms like the person referred must spend at least $25 through the portal. They are also giving away $50K and you get one entry for each referral.
To refer someone, simply head to the Ebates website, log-in and then click “Refer & Earn $100” on the top menu! You will be able to find your referral link there. If you aren’t a member you can use someone’s referral link to get them credit. Here is mine. New members gets $5 as well!
BeFrugal $10 Per Referral
BeFrugal is one of my favorite portals since they often have the highest rates for some merchants. Through 12/31/15, if you refer someone, you both get $10. I believe the referral bonus historically has been $10, but the person signing up normally gets only $5. So this is a bump, but not a huge difference from their normal referral program. Here are the terms:
To qualify for a $10 Refer-a-Friend bonus, a) new referrals must click on your unique Refer-a-Friend link and sign up as a BeFrugal.com member through that click-through; b) new members must also confirm their BeFrugal.com account and earn $25 or more in Cash Back (not including bonuses and earnings from non-purchase activity) within 90 days of account creation.

Splender $10 Per Referral
As I mentioned in my full review last week, Cartera has launched a new cashback portal called Splender. Right now they are running an increased cashback promotion and I find that they are at or near the top of payout for most merchants. While I don’t believe their referral program is temporary like the others, this is a new portal so your friends probably aren’t members.

Upromise $20 Per Referral
The Upromise portal is offering $20 to new members and $20 to the member who refers them. This promotion is good through the end of the year, but seems to be targeted. I received an email that I had to click to get my referral link. I would search your email and/or login to see if you can see a referral screen. I wish they would make this easier.
This is probably the best deal for signing up since you get $20 after making a qualifying purchase. Too bad it isn’t a public deal for everyone.
Analysis
As far as offers go, I think the Ebates referral is a no-brainer. Grab your family or friends and sign them up. All you need is 3 referrals and I’m sure most people will be spending $25 before the end of the year. If you are targeted for the Upromise referrals, then I think that is great as well for both referrer and referee. As for the others, they are nice, but there is only so much time and so many people who want to be referred!
Conclusion
In addition to these, other portals offer referrals year round so keep a look out for what is available. Beyond that don’t forget to use Cash Back Monitor to compare payouts. As I explained in my portal strategy, I use a group of reliable portals and always click through to the one that pays the most. When it comes to portals, I’m loyal to my wallet above anything else and I suggest giving any friends you refer that same advice. Happy clicking!
