Staples Amex Gift Card Rebate Deal
Staples has a negative cost Amex gift card deal coming next week. This is not one of their beast rebate promotions on gift cards, but it is still a good deal. Let’s take a look!
- Get a $20 Staples Gift Card via easy rebate when you buy $300 in American Express Gift Cards.
- Deal valid from 6/11/17 through 6/17/17
- In-store only.
- Limit 1 rebate per name/address/household.
The deal can be found on the upcoming week’s ad on the Staples website.
Maximizing the Deal
This deal is usually best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.
Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math assuming a $20 Staples gift card is worth $20:
- Cost: $413.90
- Minus Rebate: $20
- Final Cost: -$6.10
- UR Points Earned: 2,070
You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.
Currently, there’s still a Staples Amex Offer going on that gives you 2,000 MR points or $20 on a purchase of $100 or more at Staples. So if you purchase $300 worth in Visa gift cards, the math would look like this:
- Cost: $312.90
- Minus Rebate: $20
- Final Cost: -$7.10
- MR Points Earned: 2,313
If you have the Amex Offer on more than one card then you can try doing a split payment and you’ll receive 4,313 MR points instead. That offer is available till 6/15/17.
These deals are nice if you have a Staples nearby. Usually stock tends to run out quickly when these types of deals come around, but not as much on these Amex gift card deals. I mentioned above the this is not the best gift card deal from Staples and that’s because Amex Gift Cards are not easy to unload and the rebate is in the form of a Staples Gift Card. That rebate can either be used at Staples, or sold for about $17.
While this deal won’t make your Ultimate Rewards balance swell too much, it is a way to pickup a chunk of points and a few dollars too. This time around some people will also have the Amex Offer as an option, which could be much better.
