Staples Visa Gift Card Deal
Staples sells a variety of Visa & Mastercard gift cards. Depending on the value (up to $200) the fee to purchase these can cost as much as $6.95. They do often run rebate promos on these cards, however the rebates are limited to one per household meaning it gets hard to scale up. Two weeks ago they started a new trend, with a waived fee on MasterCard gift cards. Now they’ve done even better, they’ll waive the fee on Visa gift cards.
Most stores have not been enforcing 1 per person limits. Some are allowing up to 10 cards in one transaction. The promo rings up on every card! No need to do separate transactions!
- No purchase fee when you buy a $200 Visa® Gift Card
- Valid 5/6/18–5/12/18.
- The Visa Gift Card is issued by MetaBank
- Limit 1 per customer.
You can find the full terms in the weekly ad.
Maximizing This Deal
Since there seems to be a limit of 1 discounted purchase fee per transaction (who knows if that will be enforced), it is probably best to purchase $200 cards in order to achieve the most spend. However, during that MasterCard deal mentioned above, you were able to purchase multiple gift cards in the same transaction, with a waived fee.
Cards like the Chase Ink Plus, Ink Cash and Amex SimplyCash Plus will all earn 5X/5% back on these purchases. I also assume you may be able to visit multiple stores and/or ask to do multiple transactions despite the terms, but that is obviously YMMV.
Remember to transfer any points you earn as soon as you get them in case Chase limits transfers like it has been rumored.
Liquidating Visa Gift Card
The Visa gift card is pin-enabled. The PIN number is usually the last four digits of the card number. You can utilize my previous liquidation strategy or simply use it for normal spend.
I’m sure some of your Ink cards have been in overdrive during that Mastercard promotion, but get them ready to go again with this deal. It’s nice to see Staples move away from the restricted rebate program to a discount that is seemingly more scalable. Test it out with multiple Visa gift cards in same transactions, and hopefully it works again. That would make things much easier.
