Staples Mastercard Gift Card Deal

Staples has been a little quiet on the Visa/MC rebate front lately, but thankfully a new deal will begin this Sunday. Starting 10/4/15 through 10/10/15 they will be offering a $20 Staples gift card via rebate with the purchase of $300 or more in Mastercard gift cards.

Key Terms

  • In store only.
  • Limit of one rebate per household.

How to Maximize

This deal is best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink cards. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.

Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards. Here is the math:

  • Cost: $413.90
  • Minus Rebate: $20
  • Final Cost: -$6.10
  • UR Points Earned: 2,070

Since this rebate comes in the form of a Staples gift card it is less than ideal. You can of course use the gift card to purchase items at Staples or gift card resellers will buy it for up to 86% or $17.20. By going that route, you would end up with an overall gain of $3.30 plus the points of course.

The last time they ran this MC deal the rebate was only $15, so I am glad to see it return to its higher $20 value! Now if I can only find a store with a stock of cards. That has become increasingly difficult lately as these deals have become more popular.

HT: Slickdeals

  1. I would like to use this to help meet min spend on my Amex Platinum (100K offer). Would there be any issue with Amex not counting this toward my min spend?

  2. Just went to try and cash the MC’s that I got at Walmart, and guess what….

They don’t have any PIN’s included. I guess I will now have to call in, to get PINs assigned to all my MC’s, to cash them out at Walmart…..

  3. A little over a year ago, I got Staples gift cards and I was able to purchase stamps, shipping and other store gift cards (like Starbucks). Then earlier this year, the policy changed and now cannot even buy those in store.

Is this a regional restriction or nationwide?

      • Are you referring to buying other gift cards is hardcoded? I know you can buy stamps with Staples gc as I did it a few months ago.

        • I haven’t tried myself, but I was told they recently changed their registers to hardcode against using gift cards for gift cards and stamps. Either way it has been against policy for quite a long time.

          • Been my experience too. Used to be clerks would accept the $20 rebate gift/debit cards towards purchases of new gift cards. But that party was ended.

fyi, I was able recently to unload the $20 Staples rebate/visa cards for purchase of e-gift cards via Kroger’s on-line portal. That saved quite a few steps.

  4. haven’t had a staples MC to load to Serve at before, plz share tips of how to liquidate at walmart or family dollar stores? TIA

  5. It is not going to be helpful for most people but I have had no problem finding the $200 gift cards in multiple downtown Staples in Boston and NYC. The key is being near a store that doesn’t have free parking.
