Staples Mastercard Gift Card Deal

Staples Mastercard Gift Card Deal

Staples sells a variety of Visa & Mastercard gift cards. Depending on the value (up to $200) the fee to purchase these can cost as much as $6.95. They do often run rebate promos on these cards, however the rebates are limited to one per household meaning it gets hard to scale up. Well, this week they are trying something different. Let’s take a look.

There are reports that these are not being limited to one per person in store so sooner may be better.  The rumor is that Staples is purging their gift cards and will not longer be carrying these in the future.  This is 100% speculation at this point.

Remember to be cautious when ramping up with Chase.  Huge spikes in spending (if not your norm) can lead to possible shut downs.

The Offer

  • No purchase fee when you buy a $200 Mastercard® Gift Card

Key Terms

  • Valid 4/22/18–4/28/18.
  • The Mastercard® Gift Card is issued by U.S. Bank National Association, pursuant to a license from Mastercard International.
  • Limit 1 per customer.

You can find the full terms in the weekly ad on page 2.

Maximizing This Deal

Since there seems to be a limit of 1 discounted purchase fee per transaction (who knows if that will be enforced), it is probably best to purchase $200 cards in order to achieve the most spend. Cards like the Chase Ink Plus, Ink Cash and Amex SimplyCash Plus will all earn 5X/5% back on these purchases. I also assume you may be able to visit multiple stores and/or ask to do multiple transactions despite the terms, but that is obviously YMMV.

Spending the Mastercards

These Mastercards are PIN-enabled and should work anywhere Mastercard is accepted. I know people have had issues with these coding as debit cards at Walmart, but they do work at some places and can be run as credit if you are just using them to buy normal products.

Also be aware that Matercards have had issues with fraud in the past so don’t hold onto these long.

Given that Office Depot just ended their generous Visa gift card rebate I’m sure some of your Ink cards have fatigue, but get them ready to go again with this deal. It’s nice to see Staples move away from the restricted rebate program to a discount that is seemingly more scalable. Even if it is with Mastercards. 🙁

  1. They may be getting rid of them because these U.S. Bank issued MC gift cards are huge with scammers. I bought one last fall, it was drained by a scammer days later, and it took forever to get the money back from U.S. Bank, and I had to file a CFPB complaint to get it back. Never had a problem w dozens of AmEx and Visa gift cards. AVOID!

  2. I’d be careful with the word “unlimited” in all caps and exclamation points. These are not intended to be unlimited – you’ve posted the terms yourself. With this title you’re probably going to disappoint most people who click it and then

    1) spend their time getting to the store and realizing they can only buy one, as the promotion is intended
    2) are able to buy a large handful, only to be shutdown by Chase the next day, which is a very real risk these last few days
    3) are able to buy a large handful, which are then fraudulently drained before having a chance to be used

    • Tim it is all laid out inside the article about people being successful in purchasing multiples in store. I think it is important to relay the message that people are able to buy multiples within the same purchase and that Staples could potentially be clearing out their gift cards for good. I will add in the warnings about Chase and MasterCard. Thanks for the comment.

  3. Hi, I went today at Staples store at 7000 West Forest Preserve Drive, Norridge, IL 60706. The store manager wasn’t aware of this deal and while checking out at the register the 6.95 wasn’t getting dropped off. They don’t want to cross check with area manager on this deal.
