Staples Visa, Mastercard & Amex Gift Card Deal
This upcoming week Staples is bringing back their popular negative cost gift card deal with a twist. Instead of being limited to a specific type of prepaid card, you can earn a $20 rebate with the purchase of $300 or more in Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift cards.
- Offer valid 12/6/15 – 12/12/15. (See ad on page 3)
- In store only most likely. (All past deals have been in-store only.)
- Limit of one rebate per household.
What to Buy
To start, you should most likely go for the Visas since they are the easiest to liquidate. Also keep in mind that the Amex gift cards are NOT pin-enabled. For more information on liquidating these cards, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards
Maximizing the Deal
This deal is best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink cards. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.
Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards. Here is the math:
- Cost: $413.90
- Minus Rebate: $20
- Final Cost: -$6.10
- UR Points Earned: 2,070
Liquidate the Rebate Gift Card
Since this rebate comes in the form of a Staples gift card it is less than ideal. You can of course use the gift card to purchase items at Staples or gift card resellers will buy it for up to 87% or $17.40. By going that route, you would end up with an overall gain of $3.50 plus the points.
These deals are nice if you have a Staples nearby. With the limit of one per household I wouldn’t go out of my way to get it since some stores run out of stock quickly. Either way, you can’t argue with free points and money.
