Travel Hacker Guide Summer 2016

Travel Hacker Guide Summer 2016

Awhile back Kayak began releasing so called “Travel Hacker Guides” detailing the most popular destinations and trends in travel. (Side note: I wonder how Alaska Airlines feels about this.) The first time I covered the guide was for their 2015 edition and they followed that up with a holiday guide.

Today Kayak has released their Summer 2016 Travel Hacker Guide. I do love statistics and fancy infographics, so naturally I thought I would share. Among the topics they cover are the top trending destinations across the world. While lists are nice, they back it up with data.

For example, Rio is the top destination this Summer because of the Olympics. Here is some of the data they present:

Naturally everything spikes in August. Not surprising given the Olympics. It also shows that June is a good time to visit. This is especially true considering the cheap flights to Brazil right now (about $500 roundtrip) and the Visa waiver going into place starting June 1!

Conclusion

If you are still looking for a Summer destination or if you just like to look at data, then I suggest giving the Travel Hacker Guide a quick look. They have four different lists with tons of data for every destination listed. Is any of this life changing? No, probably not but it is fun to look at and may help you decide where to go and when to book!

  1. Love my Maryland, but Ocean City MD beating out Austin and Key West for weekend getaways?? That’s absurd. The worst time to go to OCMD is the weekend. Unless you like second hand smoking reds and traffic jams on the main drag, lest not forget the 2 hour wait for subpar food made by highschool students. The place has its charms. I could give you plenty of reasons to go there,Monday thru Friday. I grew up on it, it’s not a better choice than the others they list however. I have to suspect this guide is a pay to play.

    • Of course I can’t guarantee whether it is pay to play or not, but supposedly it is based on search data collected by Kayak. The rankings are based on the number of searches. My guess is that geographically Ocean City may be easier to get to for larger parts of the population than Austin or Key West given its somewhat close location to the Northeast population centers. Thanks for your insight on Ocean City. It doesn’t seem like the nicest place to visit.

  2. you can definitely make a much better travel hacker guide thats truly a worthwhile read…

this guide is just “empty” eye candy with no real analysis except for some interesting data points thats consolidated. but its still interesting to look at. looks pretty. just not “hacking” per se.
