Office Depot Deal & Buying Visa Gift Cards at Sears
Big Habitat wrote a post yesterday about an Office Depot deal offering $20 off the purchase of $100 Sears gift cards through 10/18. He mentions that you can possibly use the Sears gift cards to purchase gas cards or Amazon gift cards in-store at Sears.
Visa Gift Cards at Sears
There is also a possibility of purchasing Visa gift cards at Sears as well. Unfortunately each Sears store is different and some do not allow the purchase of gift cards with gift cards.
The reason this deal is so good is that you are getting 20% off the Sears gift cards plus 5x points at Office Depot if you use a Chase Ink card. If you can turn around and buy $200 Visa gift cards, then it is a nice haul. Lets take a look at the math.
Math of the Deal
- Cost of two Sears gift cards at Office Depot: $160
- $200 Visa gift card fee: $6.95
- Total cost: $166.95
- Total profit: $33.05
- Total points earned: 807
The gift cards sold at Sears are the same as the ones sold at Staples, meaning you should be able to load them to Bluebird or Serve.
As you can see by the math, this deal can be quite lucrative. Apparently there is a limit of 3 $20 off discounts per customer (done in separate purchases) at Office Depot, however it is an instant rebate, which means you can visit the same store multiple times or different stores.
The key to this deal is finding a Sears cashier who will let you purchase gift cards with gift cards. From what I understand it is against their policy to allow it, however the registers will allow it. Definitely YMMV.
If you know your Sears will allow it, or want to start small to give it a shot, then this is definitely a great deal. If you can find a good Office Depot/Sears combination, this deal could scale quite well. Be careful though and don’t go overboard or you might be stuck with a bunch of Sears gift cards.
Visa Gift Cards at Sears – One Reader’s Experience
One of my readers just emailed me and reported he had success, which is what inspired me to actually write this post and share the deal.
Keep in mind you can still buy other gift cards as well (if they allow it) or even use the Sears gift cards to actually shop at Sears. (Gasp!) While this deal isn’t for everyone, I think it is a good enough to share. Enjoy!
