Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens Visiting the Philippines

The Philippines are a popular destination for Americans and many others around the world. In 2015 it was ranked as the 14th most popular travel destination for Americans. But getting into the country could become more difficult, if the Philippines president follows through on his threats.

Duerte has warned that Americans who want to enter the Philippines will be required to obtain a visa. That is if the U.S. refuses entry to officials involved in the detention of one of his main critics. He has also ordered the immigration bureau to ban two U.S. senators.

U.S. citizens may currently enter the Philippines for purposes of tourism without a visa. You just need to show valid U.S. passport and a return ticket to the United States or an onward ticket to another country. Upon your arrival, immigration authorities will stamp an entry visa valid for 30 days on your passport.

The new visa rules are just a threat for now, but it is a god idea to keep an eye on new developments if you have travel plans in the area.

  1. All that does is make the casual traveler go to visa free places like Thailand or Malay. Just hurts the Philippines in the end.
