World of Hyatt Welcome Offer Changes

The World of Hyatt credit card was launched to much fanfare, myself included.Ā  I called it the new king of hotel cards in my review.Ā  The card has a lot to offer.Ā  It has a lucrative welcome offer, a good earning structure, valuable points, and nice spending bonuses. Unfortunately Chase instilled the Chase 5/24 rule on all cards so it is not available to everyone like it used to be.

Chase has announced some changes to the welcome offer that is reducing the value by $180 in the next week or so.Ā  If you were considering the card, and are under 5/24 you may want to jump on the offer before the offer is devalued.

Details on the New Offer

The new World of Hyatt credit card welcome offer goes into place starting January 10, 2019.

  • Earn 25,000 points after $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months
  • Earn another 25,000 points after $6,000 within the first 6 months

Conclusion

The World of Hyatt credit card is one of my favorite cards and is near the front of my wallet.Ā  I even upgraded my wife’s Hyatt card so we could earn 2 free nights after spending $15,000 each year.Ā  The current welcome offer of 60,000 points is more lucrative than the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve card at this point. If it was on your list don’t miss out and get it before the 10th. Too bad it is no longer available to everyone.

  1. Wife and I have the old Hyatt cards active, both for over 2 yrs.. Both of us are under 5/24. Can I call and cancel the order and Hyatt cards, and apply for the new one tomorrow? Or can I call and ask for the 60k offer to upgrade on both cards?

    • The upgrade offer is only for 2K. People have done the closure and application thing in the past. It does come with some risks and only waiting one day in between is not ideal for appearance sake but I believe it has been done.

  2. Hi, does anybody know how long I should wait after closing my current Hyatt card? Or can I apply for this one and call them to cancel my old one once it goes into review?

    • I would cancel it before the application. In the past people have waited a few weeks after closing to reapply just for appearances sake. I don’t think you have to wait more than a few days though in reality.

The one thing to be aware of though is that if you are denied you may be without a Hyatt card. You could upgrade your current card to the new one but the upgrade offer is like 2K in points. Just be sure you are under 5/24 before you go down this road so you are not stuck with no Hyatt cards (if you want to hold one that is). Just wanted to make sure you are aware of the risks involved.

      • I cancelled my card and reapplied within two days. I received a letter of denial stating that I already had a card. I called them about 14 days after my application and they recommended me to apply one billing cycle after cancelling the card. Also, my credit report was not pulled so at least that wasnā€™t affected.

        • Sorry to hear that but thanks for giving us the DP. Also glad to hear the credit report wasn’t pulled. You think you will still pull the trigger for it at 50K? If you have a player 2 that has a Hyatt card already they should be able to refer you for an extra 5K which could close the gap to the 60K offer a little bit.

  3. Iā€™m under 5/24 and have 15 nights worth of stays coming up in Asia in late March. I donā€™t have the CSP or Hyatt card but canā€™t decide which to go for first. I want the CSP now for my trip but at the same time I feel like the Hyatt card MIGHT benefit me to have during my trip. Most all my stays are at Regency properties in Tokyo, Kyoto, Phuket and Hong Kong. What is your thought process on this?

    • William that is a tough call. I will try to lay some stuff out for you to help you in the decision but you really can’t go wrong either way.

World of Hyatt has the more lucrative offer in the terms of value (60K vs 50K) and the offer is about to drop and it is unknown if it will come back to this level again. That adds some urgency but 10K points isn’t the end of the world either. If you are paying cash for the hotels then you would earn a better return on those stays with the WoH card. You could also start racking up nights via spend with the card and the $15K towards the free night cert while on vacay.

The CSR has better perks and a better earning structure and the more valuable points (solely because they are flexible). It also comes with better travel protections if you pay for some of your trip (flights) with it then that is a plus. You also will get lounge access for the trip if you don’t have a Priority Pass card already.

If you are 2 or 3/24 then you could get both spread out and it would probably make more sense to grab the Hyatt card first to get the bigger bonus. If you are at 4/24 and this is your last card for a while then the CSR would probably make more long term sense for most people who spend a lot on travel and dining out.

      Hope I helped some šŸ™‚

  4. Just had Player 2 get it. I’m not under 5/24 until 5/20 :(. Any data points of being able to beg your way into it even over 5/24?

    • Nope šŸ™ I wish. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the offer go up again sometime in the future…hopefully in May šŸ˜‰
