Delta Imposing Fuel Surcharges on Award Flights to Europe Originating in the US

There is a report by Point Me to the Plane that Delta has begun imposing fuel charges on all award tickets to Europe, including those originating in the US. According to their report, a Delta representative confirmed that this will be the case going forward for all awards to Europe. Delta actually started passing along fuel charges for flights originating in Europe last year, but you could get around that as long as you booked a round trip or flew one way from the US.

Could This Possibly Be a Mix-Up?

It seems odd for Delta to make such a huge change without any notice or announcement (though they’re definitely not known for transparency). It’s also odd for them to impose fuel surcharges on self-operated flights. A few Google Flights searches revealed that the charges have not taken effect on all Delta flights or partner operated flights to Europe, so there’s still some hope that this was a giant mistake.

Conclusion

Without official word from Delta, it’s hard to say whether this is definitely their new policy. SkyMiles has been a turbulent program with little transparency and a history of devaluations. In any case, if you have travel to book to Europe, I would try to get it done today.
