American Airlines has sent out emails with a targeted offer to some customers to earn free Gold or Platinum status till the end of the year.

The Offer

Register for this exclusive offer to enjoy free American Airlines AAdvantage® Platinum status through December 22, 2017. Use the promotion code you received from us to register before you travel; valid until October 2, 2017. You’ll also receive twenty 500-mile upgrades just for registering. The email included promo code HVPRG, and you can test it out here, but most likely you’ll see “We’re sorry but the AAdvantage account you entered isn’t eligible for this promotion” if you didn’t receive an email directly.

You’ll be eligible for all the perks of Platinum status, including:

  • Complimentary upgrades on flights 500 miles or less within North America (confirmed as early as 48 hours before departure)
  • Complimentary access to Main Cabin Extra and Preferred seats

Conclusion

  1. AA is so frustrating to deal with. Got this offer today, registered; app and website show platinum status, but it won’t let me pick an elite seat or main cabin extra. The upgrades are not there.
    I called in, and they said it’ll take up to a week for me to actually be able to use any benefits. I have a flight on Sunday (they don’t work tomorrow and Sunday) and so I asked if they can manually give me a better seat – they said, no. “system doesn’t allow it”.
    Even UA is not this broken.
