Hilton HHonors Amex 80K

Hilton HHonors Amex 80K

The no annual fee Hilton HHonors Amex has a “best ever” offer with 5,000 more points than the previous best. It has a higher spending requirement though. Let’s take a look.

The Offer

Earn 80,000 points after spending $2,000 during the first three months. (As is the case with all Amex cards, you are not eligible if you have ever had this card before.) Offer expires 5/31/2017.

Card Features

  • Silver status.
  • Earn gold status with $20K in spend.
  • Earn 7X at Hilton properties, 5X at U.S. restaurants, supermarkets and gas stations and 3X everywhere else.

Analysis

This is a very solid offer for a no-fee card and it is 5,000 points above the previous best for this card. It will also give you some extra cards in your pocket for Amex Offers.

It comes with a $2,000 spending requirement, instead of the previous $1,000 that was required for the 75K bonus. So you’re only getting and extra 5x Hilton points on that extra $1,000 spend.

Surpass or No Annual Fee?

The clear choice now becomes which of the offers is better for the Hilton Amex cards. You can get 80K with no annual fee or 100K with a $75 annual fee. That means you would be purchasing the additional 20K points for about 0.375 cent each which is alright. Personally, I think it comes down to your needs. If you have a good use for the bonus categories on the Surpass and if you want or need Gold status then I would get that card. If not, you can’t go wrong with 80,000 points on a no annual fee card.

Conclusion

It is nice to see American Express getting aggressive with signup bonuses for their hotel cards. Between the two Amex card offers, the 75K offer on the no AF Citi card and two free nights with the Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve card, there are a ton of great ways to earn free nights with Hilton through sign-ups.

Are you going to apply for one of these cards? Which of the two Amex Hilton offers do you think is best?

  1. My question is this:
I have the HHonors Surpass with the 75$ annual fee. Can I get this card and cancel my Surpass and still get the 80,000 points? It says that you are “not eligible for the bonus points if you have, or have had this product before.” Does having the Surpass card count as having “this product?”

  2. I contacted Amex because I applied and was approved for this 3 days ago.

    – No, they will not switch me to the new offer.

    – No, now that I’ve been approved for this one, I cannot cancel and re-apply for the higher offer, even though I don’t have the card yet.

I’ll try contacting them one more time, but I fear this is a lost cause.

    • They officially have a policy of not honoring higher offers, but sometimes if you ask for a “courtesy credit” from a manager they will give you the difference. It doesn’t always work, but many have had success.
