I find it annoying that we have to do this but it is something to keep an eye on.  It is even worse if people are on different booking/reference numbers since airlines are more likely to split you up that way.  That happened to me on my flight to Amsterdam but luckily the gate agent was able to move us around after a last minute aircraft substitution.
