British Airways Avios Award Sale

British Airways Avios is a program everyone should know and use. While they don’t always have the best deals, in certain circumstances they can save you a ton of money. My overall favorite redemption was my 12.6 cents per point flight redemption up to Green Bay to see my Packers play.

Anyway, British Airways today has released a very good 50% off sale on the heels of AA’s awesome sale yesterday. Let’s take a look at the details and why this could be a good deal.

The Offer

Fly for up to 50% off in World Traveller (Economy) or World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) between select cities. Here are the details of the offer:

If you can’t tell, the prices above are roundtrip and are for off-peak times. For example, a one-way from New York to London is normally 13K Avios, but is now only 6,500 under this deal. Similarly an off-peak one-way from Los Angeles to London is only 8,125 Avios in economy.

Key Terms

  • Book directly with British Airways (BA) between 7 November 2019 and 21 November 2019 for travel between 7 November 2019 and 30 April 2020.
  • This offer applies to both peak and off-peak Avios prices and can be booked by any British Airways Executive Club member logged into their account and with a sufficient Avios balance.
  • The 50% discount on direct one-way and return British Airways operated flights in the economy (World Traveller) and premium economy (World Traveller Plus) cabins only.

You can find the full details and terms on the British Airways Avios 50% Off Sale Page

Fuel Surcharges

British Airways does charge fuel surcharges on their flights so it is a shame they aren’t extending this sale to American Airlines operated flights. (I had initially thought this deal was much better until I realized this restriction.) I suppose even with surcharges this could be worth considering, especially since BA seems to have amazing availability based on my searches. With that said check cash prices too.

Example: Roundtrip taxes/fuel surcharges for JFK-LHR in economy are $355.20.

Modest fuel surcharges on this route, but look for AA flights that don’t have any!

Transfer in Points

British Airways is a transfer partner of both Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards. I often transfer points in during bonus periods where Amex offers better than 1:1. For example I transferred in some Avios during a recent 40% bonus, meaning the JFK-LHR route would only cost me a little over 4,500 Membership Rewards points.

Bottom Line

By taking advantage of British Airways Avios transfer bonuses and deals like this one you can fly for very cheap in the right circumstances. While this British Airways Avios Award Sale won’t be for everyone, you can’t argue with 13K points roundtrip from New York to London!

  1. BA is SUPER tricky. I just saw that it has now fraudulently increased the fuel surcharge fees on Hong Kong flights to $330 (from around $45 earlier today). It is illegal to charge a fuel surcharge on flights departing HK.

(Also, they charge a fuel surcharge on Brazil flights too, which is also illegal, but they have always done this, it’s not a change from hours ago.)
