IHG Credit Card Perks Stack for the Time Being

IHG Credit Card Perks Stack for the Time Being

Chase and IHG recently launched a new IHG Rewards Club Premier credit card. The Premier version replaced the old IHG Chase card. While it was no longer possible to apply for the old version many people still carry it. Unless you took the small upgrade offer for the Premier card you probably still have the old version in your wallet.  Some people decided they wanted to carry both cards and applied for the new version as well. It looks like that was a great move.  A contact at Chase confirmed that IHG credit card perks stack for the time being.

What Does This Mean

A member of our Facebook group asked if the 4th night free and 10% back in points perks stack if you have both cards.  I wasn’t sure if that was the case, or if one took precedence, so I reached out to Chase for an answer.  I was informed that IHG credit card perks stack for the time being.

That is like getting 32.5% off of 4 night bookings for the foreseeable future.  That is amazing value!  I believe that you are able to get the new card’s bonus even if you currently carry the old version as well.  Please share your data points below to confirm but I don’t think there is a family rule like the Sapphire or Southwest products have.

Conclusion

There is no telling how long this will last or how long it will be before all of the old IHG credit cards are product changed to the new Premier version.  Consider that before running out to apply for the Premier version. But if you stay at IHG hotels often and for 4 night stays this could be a game changer for you.

I would be curious to hear some first hand reports of this actually working out there in the wild as well.  If you have had these stack please let us know in the comments section.

  1. Hey Mark,

If the old IHG is converted to the Premier card, wouldn’t you want to apply for the Premier now while they are separate?

    Thanks!

  2. This will likely stack with the 10% percent Ambassador reward discount as well for those that have it. A four day stay at 50,000 will price out at 150,000 with the Premier card. Two kickbacks of 15,000 should post both for the 10% old IHG card and the 10% ambassador renewal. That’s 80k off 200k or 40% off. I have booked a stay in October and another in January and hope this works as expected.

  3. Well they should stack. You’re paying the annual fee for both cards to get those benefits. If they don’t want them stacking then they should have limited members to just one card. “For the time being” means it could change. Then what would be the point of advertising those benefits and allowing users to have both cards.

  4. I have both the new and the old IHG cards. I recently completed a 4 day stay on points at the HIX in Bend, Oregon. At 25K/night, I was charged 75k for the 4 night rsv at time of booking. About 4 weeks after checkout I received my 7.5k/10% rebate.

    Life is good.

    • hm. looks like my comment finally shows up on this post. dont get it. ive had many other comments not post for the past few days. not sure wats up.

  5. So you’re saying we can get the new Premiere card, and get the sign up bonus, so this acts as a different product from the old IHG? I have the old one, and if this stacks that could be great value.

    • From the data points I have seen people have been able to get the bonus on the new card while carrying the old one. Just be careful with Chase shut downs being more prevalent don’t apply if you have had a lot of recent applications with Chase or other banks.

  6. Sorry for an uneducated question, but what are the respective benefits of both the old and new IHG cards? I have the old one, and just applied for the new one (went to pending, which makes me nervous even though I’m not over 5/24). Does one card have the 10x bonus and the other the 4th night free? Thanks!

    • The old one comes with 10% back on points stays up to 100K per year and the newer version gives you the 4th night free. If you click the links above in the article they link to the review of each version of the cards so you can see all of the perks for each.

  7. When do you see the 4th night free perk. I do not have enough points to book at the moment but when I do a search for four nights it comes up at full price even though I have the card. Do I need to have the points in my account for the reflection of 4th night free?

    • I am guessing you need to have enough points to book it. The total will be automatically adjusted when booking the stay.

  8. I have a 4 night stay booked and am considering applying for the new IHG card. I’d prefer not to cancel/rebook since I contacted the hotel and they hard coded a complimentary room upgrade into the reservation. IHG’s response via Twitter was I must cancel/rebook to get the 4th night free, but I’m hoping someone else may have had success pulling this off as a rebate request. Any data points?

    • I think you have to since the rebate is awarded at the time of booking so I don’t see a way around it. Your best shot would be contacting the hotel and letting them know and see if they will reattach the upgrade.

      • Any idea how long the wait is from card approval until the 4th night free is active and bookable online? I emailed IHG and they claimed it takes 4-6 weeks, but I can’t imagine that’s accurate.

        • Sorry I have no idea. I don’t see why it shouldn’t be immediate but IHG does have a pretty terrible IT department.

          • Sigh, I just had the ultimate good news / bad news experience with IHG’s terrible IT. Our family has a Disney Cruise leaving out of San Diego next March and I’ve been stalking the release of award space at the newly opened Intercontinental San Diego for months. Finally, last week Monday they loaded award room inventory, but made the mistake of having all room types available. Every room could be booked at 50,000 points / night, including their 915 sq ft Panoramic North Bay View Executive Suites. We had planned to stay 4 nights leading up to the cruise so I pulled the trigger on 3 suite reservations and applied (approved) for the IHG Premier card right away. I called, tweeted and emailed IHG relentlessly for 8 days pleading for them to activate the 4th night free benefit so I could cancel and rebook. Of course, they were no help. Was told it takes a few weeks. Just now the glitch was fixed and only standard rooms are now available. I’ll fight them to credit me on the existing reservations, but I’m almost surely out 150,000 points. Good news is we got the rooms booked. Here’s hoping they don’t try to pull it from us.

          • I call it a net win overall scoring the suites. Do you have the old version that you should get the 10% back at least?

          • I do! The 10% rebate is nice, but I was THIS close to turning the 100k Premier bonus into 250k. Btw, I repeatedly cancelled / rebooked over the last few days hoping to reveal the 4th night free so my final reservations reflect a booking date well after I was approved for the card. Hoping to use this as the basis for arguing my case towards a credit on the 4th nights. Will let you know if I have any success.

          • Good news! Shockingly, I convinced IHG to credit my account for the points paid on the 4th night of each reservation. Total credited was 150k (3 reservations @50k/night). I emailed IHG a timeline noting the date I was approved for the Premier card and the subsequent dates upon which I made the reservations without receiving the benefit. I also explained I could not cancel / rebook because the room type was no longer available (did not mention, of course, that rooms were suites and weren’t supposed to be available in the first place). IHG claims the credited points will be clawed back if I end up cancelling the reservations. Another plus is I will likely receive 10% back on the 4th nights I ended up getting free. My reservations still show I paid full freight in points so I would imagine this is how it will play out.

          • Awesome David – thanks for reporting back. I am shocked that IHG actually had a decent customer service response 🙂

  9. I am missing something. I have both cards, but how do I get the 4th night free AND the 10% points rebate if I am only paying for my stay with one of the two cards?

    • It is for reward stays only not for cash bookings. The 4th night free will show when you go to book and then you should get the 10% back in points a few weeks after the stay.
